Misha 00:27
Welcome to Much Abu About Nothing, a podcast where we discuss and rate animated Disney films going in alphabetical order following a rigorous scientific and quantitative scoring system based on absolutely nothing. I'm Nisha.
Tyler 00:47
And I'm Tyler, and welcome everybody to Episode 26. Seven. And if I didn't if I didn't get that right, Episode 27
Misha 00:58
Yeah, it's 727 27
Tyler 01:01
I knew I was wrong. Episode 27 I also think I got it wrong in my audition naming thing, but that's okay. And we'll we're off. We're off to a rip roaring start here.
Misha 01:16
A splish splashing start Splish Splash.
Tyler 01:20
I should take a bath because, too,
Misha 01:24
I can smell you through the zoom.
Tyler 01:26
I can smell myself through the you got stink lines. I'm pig panning out. We are talking about finding dory Splish Splash. Finding Dory, the sequel to Finding Nemo 13 years in the making was a tooth that came out 2016
Misha 01:45
years after finding Nemo and it takes place only a year after finding Nemo. So I tried to do that when they look older. When they go down there to film. Yeah,
Tyler 01:59
it's weird. It's like I mean, you know these celebrities these days you get a lot of work done. So that's true. That's true. They can Arlen definitely got a facelift for sure. Yeah.
Misha 02:09
I mean, did you see how shiny and shimmery his scales were?
Tyler 02:13
He was very shiny. Yep, he paid for that indeed.
Misha 02:18
Honestly,
Tyler 02:19
why did it? Okay, so I don't I tried to figure this out. I couldn't get it. Why did it? Why did they take so long to make a sequel? I don't know. Because like Finding Nemo was very successful, very critically acclaimed as well. Why? It seems like the obvious thing to like cash in on and make a sequel. They do it all the time. God damn did it with cars twice. So it's weird. It's weird that it took so long. And like Elon was like,
Misha 02:44
because the whole time they were trying to get Sigourney Weaver and it took 13 years to sign a deal. Maybe
Tyler 02:51
that's it? They had to Yeah, they had to do fucking like an Avengers Assemble the team to get all the celebrities that are in this goddamn movie together to pull it off to kill Thanos or whatever this movie is about. Before we get into it, no spoilers. But yeah, it's weird, like Elon was championing, like, apparently like championing the eight on her fucking show. Like saying, please like, I wanted to do Dory again. Like everyone get behind. Maybe we
Misha 03:18
were like, you're such a nightmare to work with that. We don't want to do it. Apparently. Nobody
Tyler 03:23
knew that until recently. So who knows? No,
Misha 03:26
nobody. The public didn't know it. But the people she treated badly knew it. Yeah, but
Tyler 03:31
they were silenced.
Misha 03:34
That's true. Yes. But maybe
Tyler 03:36
thrown into the briny deep with Davy Jones is Oh, sorry. That's the wrong ocean movie.
Misha 03:41
That's
Tyler 03:45
that's the
Misha 03:46
Caribbean or Caribbean.
Tyler 03:48
Caribbean queen. Now. Sure. Yeah. Caribbean I say Caribbean Caribbean. I say Caribbean. No, you have pirates. Okay. I think it changes if I say Caribbean Sea Pirates of the Caribbean. I think i i Coats Code switching is the right word but like x pronunciation hat switching? Yeah. Why am I doing this jaunty? This is insane already. What is this? Good job. All right, let's get into it. Folks. We rate these movies in different categories. I'm not going to look this time see how it goes. different categories giving them scores from one out of 10. We've got originality, story, music and sound animation, tackiness.
Misha 04:45
Those are flipped well.
Tyler 04:46
Okay. Let's see if I can catch them all. On style, originality, originality, story, animation, music and sound protagonist sidekick. villain henchmen strong female lead bipoc representation slash portrayal and fun factor and then we have minus points if something doesn't sit right. And I've got a lot of hand movements here I'm doing a lot of like sort of Sean Evans a lot of Sean Evans I'm doing a lot of close up magic on my second microphone. And bonus points for effervescence if it's got that special Pixar slash Disney slash Don Bluth magic what have you
Misha 05:31
Yeah, way to go you did it.
Tyler 05:32
I did it and I next time okay. The first time Thank you.
Misha 05:37
So you're welcome.
Tyler 05:39
Finding your honest gotta keep me honest. Gotta get me on the straight and narrow hold to the rod folks hold to the rod. Sorry that's what that means. Only Mormons will get that Mormons in serial masturbators will get what it for different reasons for pulled to the rod. Different reasons. Okay, let's get into it. What is Finding Dory about me Finding
Misha 06:04
Dory is about Dory, remembering that she has parents and going on an adventure to find them. Yeah, finding them. And then they all go back to live back at the reef with Marlin and Nemo. The end? Wow. That is
Tyler 06:27
that is a shock that that is surprisingly concise, and succinct. Wow, we Wow. Okay,
Misha 06:34
I can go into a little more detail. If you like we, you can if you want care to, let's
Tyler 06:40
say, let's say the details for the story then. I got a couple questions just straight off the bat though. It's called Finding Dory. So it's still like, but it's sexist and Marland centric, despite the fact that this is Dorries movie. I don't like that.
Misha 06:56
Yeah, it should be finding mom and girly and Jenny. Yeah,
Tyler 07:00
finding Charlie and Jenny Janay.
Misha 07:04
Her name is Jenny, Jenny. It was Jenny. I thought it was Jenny.
07:09
I think it's Jenny. I just did the GM toys. I don't
Misha 07:16
think Gump in Okay, can
Tyler 07:18
we just say, Me
Misha 07:20
and Charlie? Yeah, it's Forrest Gump. It's Jenny. Jenny.
Tyler 07:25
No, it's Jenny. He just says it in a accent.
Misha 07:28
Jenny. Oh, it's
Tyler 07:29
Jenny.
Misha 07:30
Her name was Jenny.
Tyler 07:32
Alright, now we got to look this up folks. Sorry Forrest Gump was away fucking awful movie. I liked when I was a kid. But God it's bad.
Misha 07:37
When it came out, and then I that happens you know what other movies
Tyler 07:43
a good movie that holds up with Tom Hanks in in a league of their own. So if you're gonna go back in time and watch a movie or go back to watch a movie from that time this came out at the same time, it was around the same time like around 1994
Misha 07:54
Did you know that in the last year, Bruce Willie made a 11 movies during the pandemic, okay, do you hear about this?
Tyler 08:03
I asked. My wife also was telling me about this like there's like some red what's telling me but yeah, it was telling you about this morning. He's like got dementia or early onset dementia. So he's trying to make as many movies as he can before he can't is the I guess the sub rumor? Actually,
Misha 08:22
that is interesting because Steve was telling me that he's got hearing loss in one ear from shooting guns in diehard but in some of his movies, you can see a communicator hearing aid type thing in the other ear because they're feeding him lines as he's filming because remember what they are? Yeah, I Steve posed it as he doesn't give a shit. He's just cashing in. But what you're saying those two go hand in hand
Tyler 08:51
it might be connected I don't know. I mean, I don't know the veracity of the claims that that also read but uh it's possible I mean, Marlon Brando also famously did that feed me lines tricks in different ways in the rookie with Matthew Broderick key habits you're getting to
Misha 09:10
your rookie was your favorite show with your favorite actor Nathan filmi in your
Tyler 09:17
but yes, you're right. Oh no. So wait, fuck is it called the rookie? What is it called with Marlon Brando? Oh, no.
Misha 09:25
Oh, man,
Tyler 09:27
you're right that that's the shitty show I watched but I'm
Misha 09:31
gonna say that joke I just say was really off the cuff like I started saying his name before I said it. I'm really proud of myself for that. The
Tyler 09:39
freshman Okay, the freshman. Yeah, in that movie. He had an earpiece feeding him his lines cuz he liked to like hear it and then naturally react to an AKA he didn't prepare because he was lazy, and naturally gifted and in Godfather Robert Duvall had his lines taped to his chest. So Marlon Brando could read the lines off Robert Duvall. Oh
Misha 10:00
shit. I've never seen it you've ever seen the I mean,
Tyler 10:04
interesting where or wait so one thing is yeah, it's still Marlin centric Finding Dory and I've oh, by the way in Forrest Gump it is Jenny. Jenny not Ginny. It's just the way he says it. Oh, he makes that accent on the little kid that plays young Forrest Gump, like that was his young forest natural accent. That's sort of that Georgian drawl because that's usually how they do and Tom Tommy followed that. Yeah. So, the other thing I wanted to bring up is this actually, I'll save it for the story. Let's get into it. Originality. not original. It's a sequel. It's
Misha 10:40
no not at all. Nothing about it.
Tyler 10:43
It's it's another finding family type story. It's got a little bit of the interest of like, you know, having like memory loss be a big plot device, and but it's not original. That's a sequel. Yeah. Would that any interesting things like that could go into the story score. One for originality? Yeah. That's no story. All right. What did you think of the story? Okay.
Misha 11:06
I thought it started off strong. Because I thought it was going to be about Baby Dory. Who is very cute. And I was like, Oh, this is going to be a movie, where it leads into like, a prequel rather than a sequel, right? Or like,
Tyler 11:26
I knew it wasn't going to be that so yeah, it wasn't. I was.
Misha 11:30
I don't know. I kind of hoping like, maybe that's where we were going.
Tyler 11:34
I didn't. I didn't think the baby daughter was cute, but the eyes were just too big. It was really like getting it was kind of bothering me. But the voice was so cute.
Misha 11:44
Fun fact. Fun fish back number one. You want to hear it blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Juvenile blue tang are not blue. When they're wee babes. They are yellow with just a tiny little bit of blue on their own the edge of their fins from the grow into big blue.
Tyler 12:08
You know, stop the podcast I gotta talk to I gotta call Disney really quick. I gotta I gotta tell sorry, Pixar, Disney. Disney by the way. I'm gonna call Pixar and tell them how the fuck do you not do your research? Misha is over here. Bringing you to fucking clown school you idiots.
Misha 12:25
Okay back clownfish school
Tyler 12:28
back to the podcast. Sorry about that everybody recording back on Okay, get back in the zone. Tyler character back in your mind go
Misha 12:38
okay. Zhan
12:41
the RIP dad.
Tyler 12:44
That'd be nothing. I just want to say from time. It's not. It's okay. You thought the movie was gonna be about Baby Dory. And then it wasn't
Misha 12:52
I was hoping more would be because I was like, Oh, Baby Dory is cute. I don't like regular Dory. But I will say I reckon I did like regular Dory a little bit more. Yes. One.
Tyler 13:02
She had more to do and more growth. And yes,
Misha 13:05
yeah. And not just like, I'm a dumb idiot, but like actually challenging herself and learning and being a character not just like a dumb sidekick. Yep. I thought the story was just very, it was kind of simple. It was just like, all it was was like, okay, she's here now. Okay, now she's going to here and seeing a new character. Okay, now she's here with another character. Okay. And it's like, that's the entire story is that? And I know that's sort of what Finding Nemo was like, but we but I don't know. Like, okay, seeing that done that been there. Now what and it was just so simple. Yeah. And then she goes to she finds out her parents are at the Marine Life Center in Marine Life Institute, which is based off of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Yep. Which I've been to. Yeah, me too. And it's very cool.
Tyler 14:09
In a very sort of em Tonight Show Milan like twist. We find out that they're actually living in a lab the whole time in home is a science experiment.
Misha 14:25
Um,
Tyler 14:26
maybe it's just because I watched old recently, but I and her
Misha 14:29
memory loss. Oh my god, it's dementia. Yeah, is it this is an M Night Shyamalan movie.
Tyler 14:37
The twist came a bit early but like but yeah, it's very very shambles. Yeah, like we get the twist like less than halfway through the movie that she's from a Institute not a right
Misha 14:50
well I don't think that's the twist. I think that's twist is that we think they're blended a little she gets to the institute. She meets a bunch of blue tank she learns they tell her parents are dead.
Tyler 15:01
Oh, that's not the twist. That's the that's like the twist is. That's not the twist. No, that's not the twist. That's, that's that's like,
Misha 15:09
there's no twist. This isn't an M Night Shyamalan movies. It's like not shall Milan nature. It's not actually.
Tyler 15:19
But it's like straight up the same twist as Boileau for anyone who hasn't seen the fucking garbage movie all but the same fucking twist. It's an old anyway. No,
Misha 15:27
because, no, I disagree, because old is this whole thing you learn about everybody's occupations. Everybody's occupations are the only thing that motivates them to do anything. They can't wipe their own butts. But if they're a doctor, they can doctor if they're an accountant, they can account if they are a ballet dancer, they can dance. Then at the end, who cares about its lab?
Tyler 15:53
Yeah, I mean, I was just Yeah, cracking wise, but no, the but I don't think like, I don't think parents being like believed to be dead but then turning out not to be dead. That's like the I would call that I mean, maybe it's no twist. There's no Shamil on Twitter. That's a joke. I was just joking that the twist is that they that's a lab not not not actually just Monterey Bay or what it Morro Bay, whatever they call it. Nobody Yeah, like the the parents I would call that like the dark night of the soul part of the story. I don't know if that's the right way to put it. But like, the lowest place where the hero goes like Luke after Obi Wan dies, right? Like, he's never felt lower. And then he's got to rise up from that. I will say you don't think parents dying and then actually live is like a shot Milan
Misha 16:39
twist. No, that's what I'm saying. There's no Shaman. Shaman. To us. There's
Tyler 16:43
no shaman in this movie. Just forget the audience.
Misha 16:47
If you love Shyamalan twist, you will not think this movie has won. No,
Tyler 16:54
you won't. Someday Shyamalan will make a Disney movie and then I'll be happy and I can die happy just think he'd make a great Disney movie. His all of his characters are one no distinct characters basically. So
Misha 17:08
now he made a great DreamWorks know for him and he would he should make a Dreamworks movie.
Tyler 17:14
Oh yeah. If he made like Prince of Egypt to was in Egypt. I've
Misha 17:20
never seen twist. It's current day America.
Tyler 17:26
Yeah, the pyramid is the one in Las Vegas. I did see Prince of Egypt. It was fucking awful. Yeah.
Misha 17:33
I've never seen it. But now I really do want to show Milan Prince of Egypt. It
17:39
would be good. Yeah. Shit, the
Tyler 17:40
provinces? Dude camp, right, but whatever. Story. So for those that haven't seen this movie, I just want to fill in the details a little bit like it is very similar to Finding Nemo. Like, Dory goes somewhere. And she's the one in the NEMO position where she gets stuck somewhere and she has to find her own way out, which was kind of what Nemo did and then Marlin and Nemo are trying to find her and they're in the sort of Marlin position meeting kooky characters along the way like
Misha 18:09
those cielo but she's also meeting characters along the way,
Tyler 18:13
but she's meeting kooky characters along the way. She She a lot of the time she's hanging out with this octopus scepter post named Hank Neil who's trying to get thanks gang up chicks.
Misha 18:28
Wait. Who's Hank skank? Why is it in my head? Oh, yeah. My Dad Wrote A Porno. Yeah. Oh.
Tyler 18:41
Yes, yes. Yes. Yes. Oh my god.
Tyler 18:52
It's so good.
Misha 18:53
Shout out to that.
Tyler 18:54
Shout out to that podcast. So good. Go listen to them. I mean, hopefully finish this. Listen to them. Yeah. So Hank, is an octopus with missing one arm because correct me if I'm wrong octopi don't have arms don't have tentacles. They have arms, squids of tentacles. I could be wrong about a whole
Misha 19:15
thing about cephalopods well, not just Rafa plods hashtag not all cephalopods, just octopuses and squids.
Tyler 19:21
So Dori gets grabbed and put in the institute because she had like a six pack ring on her, and she's going to be shipped off to Cleveland, which we later find out is where all the tanks are going to some exhibit. Instead of getting released to the wild, I'm sure Misha has something to say about that. Hank wants to go to Cleveland because he doesn't want to be in the ocean. So he wants to tag from Dory. But in order to get it, he helps her. They go on this trip where they find meet all these kooky characters. We can talk about them in the side kicks time. Yeah, it's like the big difference with Nemo I guess is it's like okay, we gotta do we gotta do something familiar, but different because that's what sequels always do. It's been a while. So it's been a while. So let's let's remind everyone what was fun about Nemo all these kooky characters along the way. But let's also do what sequels always do and like dial it up. So every time there's all this and make it wait, this escalation and like the movie, it was like return to the king. It was like it wouldn't end it just kept going and ending but not ending. And okay
Misha 20:24
and okay, okay, okay, okay, hold on. Hold on. Take that back.
Tyler 20:31
I won't because I don't like that movie. I love the book don't like the movie. I think the movie is melodramatic and overly long is very melodramatic. Not good. It's not a good movie. I don't think I know that's like sacrilege for talking lover. And like a movie lover. It's supposed to be but that movie out of those three movies, it wasn't the best one and it only got the Oscar because it was like the culmination of all
Misha 20:52
the worry. The first is the best one and that shouldn't be getting an Oscar. Yeah,
Tyler 20:57
but they gave like all of them kind of took a lump together
Misha 21:00
Oscars but anyway, gather which I did deserves, okay, actually,
Tyler 21:03
no, it's not the same. Because this one keeps doing what movies ought to do is like, Okay, this, we're ramping it up the tension so much that the tension no longer matters. Whereas in the Finding Nemo, there's like, yeah, they do do the same. They ramp up the tension, like the what's her name, Darla shows up? The Pelican comes in and start trying to help and screws everything up. Yeah. And but like they they did it in a way that like in this,
Misha 21:26
it felt like it was just vignettes of different things happening. And it none of it mattered, right. So you could have cut out 80% of the movie and would not have lost any of the
Tyler 21:39
plot. Definitely not a good look when that's the case. Yeah. And I would agree with you that like if you're a kid, it's probably really fun to see all the physics based comedy that happens, but it's like, do we really need them to like, hijack a truck, and then like the truck to like be driven by an octopus and fly through the air slomo. Like all that sounds my favorite part. Like all I mean, the release of the release of the creatures into the sea is great. But
Misha 22:02
loon like Becky the loop, like that whole part was so long. And just like, okay, like, When is this gonna end and then they're gonna get to the next thing. And then they get to the quarantine room. And then they have to jump from one tank to another and then they get there. And then there's a pipe and then they have to get out. It's like, that's the whole Oh, we
Tyler 22:24
paid yourself a lot of money. So let's go back to the sea lions for a little bit. And mess with them again, let's bring let's bring the whale shark who was beautiful and the beluga back because they the beluga could serve a plot device that's really obnoxious. But yeah, I don't know. It's just like a lot of like stuff added on to stuff like, like, I have said this before in other movies. And maybe this isn't a good, like, metaphor for this or whatever. But it's just like, a lot of spaghetti getting thrown against the wall or against the, against the fridge to see what sticks. And it's
Misha 22:59
like, all of these things. None of these parts mattered, right? So why did they stop there? We could have had a 17 hour movie of just different rooms in the aquarium. We could have had none of them I don't
Tyler 23:15
agree with. I don't totally agree with that.
Misha 23:18
I think there was just so like, so Dorie makes it to the aquarium. And then once we're there, it's just like, okay, she goes to every single room in the aquarium. Okay, here's another thing she's interacting now with this animal. Now she's interacting with this animal. Now she's interacting with this animal. Okay, none of it really matters. It felt just very long for no reason. It wasn't actually adding anything to her. Yeah. I mean, her interest anything about the parents like I do agree with that. Marlin and Nemo trying to find her it was just okay. She made it to the aquarium very quickly.
Tyler 23:59
Yeah, like that. That part was, I think the reason why they did that is because they already had a travel through the ocean movie. So they wanted to do something different
Misha 24:07
meet the aquarium part so long, but there wasn't much in terms of plot. It was just things happen. Yeah,
Tyler 24:14
things happening, too. I mean, it was, I would say it's like it's too much plot and not enough character development. Yes, exactly. It's all like this happens. This happens to what's gonna this thing that don't escalation escalation escalation. Yeah. The reason I disagreed with what you said, it's not it's just the part where you said like, none of it means anything just because like, from a plot perspective, it's like this happens, complication does happen, because she could have generated like a to b2c because
Misha 24:41
they could have just done A to B to C, and C is where she, right corset is A to B to C to D to E to F to G, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going. They didn't need all of those parts.
Tyler 24:54
I agree with that. I'm just saying like each part connected, it's just there was too much of it.
Misha 24:59
Right? I just think it was way too long and not much happened. Yeah, cuz it's like they didn't need it. They didn't need her to go to ever all of those parts they could have. And it's about, okay, and if you're finding dory and it's about family, okay, Vin Diesel, if they're calling it Finding Dory, they Well, they shouldn't have just called it that. That's
Tyler 25:21
that Yeah, it's like Marlon, again, like from Marlins perspective. I mean, they they just did it because they're like, We need a sequel that sound like with a name that is instantly recognizable, so that's why they did it, but it doesn't like make a lot of sense movie wise, right? Yeah, I mean, I agree with you. It's like there's a lot of it could have cut a bunch of those points out. I mean, you can still introduce the beluga character whose name escapes Bailey and destiny the whale shark. And you can insert in Hank what that was, we'll get into but okay character we can you can introduce those people but cut out a lot of the there was a lot of like, meeting random fish who said like one or two like they had fucking Kate McKinnon and Bill Hader in the movie for like a hot second. And it's like, right, we do we need that. I mean, do we need those sea lions like lounge and once he was keep coming back and like, yeah, like, I see what you mean, right.
Misha 26:15
And when she got to the quarantine route that took so long for her to get to the blue tank. Like we didn't need all of that. And for like, when Hank brings her to the huge atrium where they see the world of fish or whatever it's called the open ocean exhibit. We're Yeah, yep. That seems like we don't need shenanigans. Like, or like we don't need to. It felt like almost like it was real time. We don't need that. Yeah.
Tyler 26:46
I think also, one big thing that we haven't mentioned yet that happens a lot of the movies as a plot device or to move the story forward. Dorie keeps, like remembering a little bit from her past with their parents. And that teaches her a little lesson that allows her to like, get past this challenge. Like for example, they're into the what do you call those in accordance with like, the kids can touch every touch zone or something touch tank touching. So there, they find themselves in there. And that takes forever. That story has a flashback where she remembers where she learns, just keep swimming. And that helps her get her and Hank out of there. But it's like that,
Misha 27:22
I feel like you need it to exist. The whole touch tank, right? Like
Tyler 27:26
could have been out there. Yeah, yeah. I think I totally agree. We're on the same page that there's just too many like little stops along the way that could have made it more focused. It could have still been silly and fun and crazy with with just more like focus and, like, fewer stops along the way. Right. So
Misha 27:47
right, like the scene where they're on like, under the stairs and she's in the coffee pot, and he's camouflaged as like a yellow pole. That scene was really long. Why did why was that scene in there at all? Yeah, they could have moved Destiny's bucket to somewhere else, right, like, way too many places that they went to within
Tyler 28:08
the aquarium. What are we thinking about a score? Okay,
Misha 28:11
so the end of the movie, let's just talk about that spoilers. The end of the movie. Story thinks her parents are dead, she ends up accidentally flowing out of a drain back into the open ocean is panicking because she's lost Nemo and Marlin who are like stuck in a tank on their way or in a truck on their way to Cleveland. Her parents she thinks are dead. And her way of thinking all of a sudden she sees shells and she gets distracted by them flashback to her and her thing was shells. Yep. I know following shells. Yep. And she starts following the shells. And there's a whole lot of pads of shells leading to this little coral house. And she follows it and her parents had set that up for her hoping that she would eventually find her way back to more a bay and find her parents and it worked. So then they all go they free Marlin and Nemo from the truck with the help of some sea otter friend which takes
Tyler 29:18
forever right
Misha 29:19
yeah, that's yeah. The whole car scene truck scene stopping them like that's what
Tyler 29:25
I mean with the Yeah, like so many endings that could have been like okay, that's the movie and then it keeps going. Yeah.
Misha 29:34
They free Marlin and Nemo and all the other animals on the truck. They all are free in the ocean again. And then Hank, Charlie, Jenny, Marlin, Nemo and Dory all go back to the coral reef and live together.
Tyler 29:52
Happily destiny and Bailey.
Misha 29:54
Oh, yeah, that's right. That doesn't make any fucking sense. We'll get to that. Why
Tyler 29:58
is it beluga whale there click
Misha 30:00
OK here. Fun fact. I don't know where I wrote this in my notes, but fun fact. What's the belugas name? Bailey? Yeah, okay. Anyway, I think one fact belugas are Arctic whales, Arctic whales, and they don't live in a warm tropical reefs. And so
Tyler 30:23
yeah, I was, I was pretty sure that's the case because I was like, What is he? Yeah, it was a band. Yeah. Take whales.
Misha 30:28
Here's a next fact about this. Arctic whales don't have dorsal fins because they lose too much heat through their dorsal fins. They have a dorsal Ridge, but not an actual fin to prevent heat loss. interest. So they're closely related to Nar walls. Right? And, yep. And, yeah, they do not live in coral reefs and tropical. Yeah, waters warm waters.
Tyler 30:58
Yeah. There's a lot of like, this creature wouldn't survive in that, like bucket of like janitor water and like
Misha 31:06
clownfish. clownfish would die within minutes. If not.
Tyler 31:13
More, too. Oh, yeah, that
Misha 31:14
too. Yeah. You know that, um, the toy tank they like got launched somehow in one of these very lungs. Yeah, they're in a gift shop very, very young. So yeah. And there's a tank of water with like, plastic toy fish that can swim that would kill them. Yeah, their gills can't process freshwater. That's why there are freshwater fish and saltwater fish. And there are some animals that can do both but clownfish are not. Yeah.
Tyler 31:45
What did you think? I mean, I know you said that it was unnecessary. But what did you think about just knowing you? The touch tank portraying children as monsters? Like sort of eltra chores? Children are monsters. Yeah. What did you think about that? Like with the starfish yelling? No. And like getting dragged? Yeah, that's
Misha 32:02
accurate. I'm sure. Yeah, children are monsters.
Tyler 32:07
I feel like that scene because it was like sort of like the whole, like the the trauma that is inflicted on zoo animals and aquarium animals like for our benefit. And despite I mean, even if they're like a capture rehabilitate release type place, but as we've talked about before, that's rare in that world, right. As we see, things are getting sold to Cleveland. Right. So we even see that part of it, which is
Misha 32:30
right, we talked about that. Yeah, the trade with that. of animals within zoos and aquaria. It's terrible. Yeah.
Tyler 32:41
So what do we think about a score for story? I mean, I think my proposal would be somewhere in the middle, like it's okay, but it's just not great.
Misha 32:53
I would say low middle, because it's just, it's like, just okay. Okay.
Tyler 33:02
So you think like a four? Is that we mean by middle or like five? Yep, four. Okay, I'm fine with that. Oh, boy. The hate I can hear the storks bringing the hate mail. Oh direction. Babies full of babies filled with hate mail. Animation. I thought the animation was really good.
Misha 33:24
The animation is good. Yeah, it was really good. I actually think it was better than the first one as it should. Since it was 13 years later. There were a couple standout scenes. I mentioned the beginning of the episode, the they added iridescence and individual scales to Nemo and Marlin which were beautiful. Yeah, I really liked that.
Tyler 33:49
I liked that too. And just subtle Yeah, I liked that sort of subtle they they're just getting better and better at capturing like, the qualities of nature in like a realistic way rendering them beautifully. I thought Marlin and emos faces look weirder in this one. Yeah, almost to human in a weird way which was kind of off putting in
Misha 34:10
Dorries dad had like a large like bald Yeah, type thing they were doing and some of the other blue tang also had that and it really that stuff. That's uncanny valley and there's like maybe it's because just Marlon didn't age well.
Tyler 34:25
He had a lot of work done. Yeah. Albert Brooks also like if you saw him and drive. A lot of work done, but anyway. I don't need to tear down Albert Brooks. I guess he'll come after me. Yeah, it's uh, there was just it was there. A lot of beautiful moments, but they're like little wonky things like that. There's also like one baby like Kid fish in the coral colony with like, sort of major rescue buck teeth. That was like why do these
Misha 34:53
fish have humans in a parrot fish because parrot fish do have like two large front
Tyler 35:00
Isn't it might have been but it was it was too. It looks like major reader like it was very bhakti look up
Misha 35:05
parent fish tea. Yeah, look up parents know what they are.
Tyler 35:12
It didn't look like a pair of fish.
Misha 35:15
Okay, because they got cold crazy front teeth.
Tyler 35:18
They have like what looks kind of like a beak. Yeah, it wasn't a parrot fish. I mean maybe man, it was supposed to be parrot fish but they had made her to anyway. Okay, so this parrot fish looking at the perversion that makes me think like okay, fish can have human looking wonky teeth.
Misha 35:36
Yeah, they do. Yeah. Like that's why I mentioned it.
Tyler 35:40
What was some other so you the iridescent scales When?
Misha 35:46
When Nemo and Marlin are first talking to the sea lions, and they're like floating at sea, like above the water. The water looks really good. It was really beautiful. Yeah, I really liked that a lot. I
Tyler 36:03
liked there were a couple of scenes where like you see the the kelp and the seaweed looked really beautiful. They did a better job of when the fish I still think it looked a tiny bit wonky, but it looked better. Like when the fish are above the surface of the water. The shininess especially the octopus looked a little off still. But I mean, it's wasn't
Misha 36:22
like oil rather than water. Yeah.
Tyler 36:27
I really liked there to sort of weird cinematic. like sort of like quick moving dolly shot type things where Dory rushes out of the coral. And then when she rushes like point of view from her perspective, she gets sucked out back to sea after she finds out her parents are while she thinks her parents are dead. Cool. Dead, right? Yeah, very cool. Especially the second one where it's like you see it from her point of view. It was very cool. I like that too. Very cool.
Misha 36:55
Um, did you notice when Dori says to Hank that she's going to remember him that he's slightly blushes? Yeah. That was really cute. Yeah, just ever so slightly.
Tyler 37:08
Speaking of Hank, an animation like that he was amazing. The his movement, his movements, yeah, and his camouflage and everything about like he he looked really, really great. He really was like one of the shining stars of this film, at least animation wise. So
Misha 37:27
that's the thing they could have had just like, cut out a lot of the other characters and sort of done more with him. Or just cut down on those parts. And like more with Hank, I thought their shenanigans were super fun, like the whole carriage seen or the stroller seen. Yeah, that's like they should have done more with them.
Tyler 37:50
I'm wondering if like, they already had a sort of grouchy curmudgeon, and Marlon, I'm wondering if they're like, let's, let's not, let's not rely too much on the Hank Dory dynamic, because it'll be to say me, I don't know. But it might have been nice. Like when Hank and Dory were together was great. Hank is. And I think it's because Hank is like one of the more complicated complex characters of this, he has some trauma that's not being dealt with about the ocean. He wants to go to Cleveland, he's got this like goal that he's trying to stick to. Right. So he's like helping in a Han Solo esque, like selfish move, but then like, becomes altruistic and does it for friendship, like helps for friendship and ultimately goes to the ocean to save Dory. And it's like, he was such a great character. We could have had more of him. I really thought so. Anyway, animation, I think this movie is like, this is like, they built on everything they learned doing brave and the cars movies and really knocked it out of the park. It's like really pretty. I think it's like, I mean, nine or 10 I think 10 Because there are some small subtle things.
Misha 38:58
I think it's up to a nine.
Tyler 39:00
Yeah, because it's also I think it's better than the original.
Misha 39:03
Yes, I do. Tim and that got an eight. Yeah, okay. All right. So
Tyler 39:09
any other any other like moments from that? That you I guess I don't think I have any more like animations. They
Misha 39:16
say, Okay, this might not be animation. I'm not really sure. But Becky the loon Do you think hey, the rooster for Molana is based off of Becky. They were very, they're very similar characters. They're very similar. Like when her head gets stuck in the popcorn bucket top. I was like, oh, yeah, that reminds me of hay, hay. And marijuana. We've
Tyler 39:39
accidentally we've mistakenly called it a Pixar movie earlier in this podcast, but it is a Disney movie. Maybe they're like Sir, yeah, maybe they're like, oh, there's that wonky looking bird. They didn't do anything with that bird or they didn't do enough. Let's let's make it a bigger, funnier character. Maybe they did. Now they're pretty quick. To the point where I was like, did Alan Tudyk do the voice for this goddamn loon because He's like, Oh, he's this stupid stupid bird with no lions. Yeah. I thought the loon was superfluous. But yeah,
Misha 40:10
yeah, that's what I'm saying.
Tyler 40:12
Yeah. I thought the the they did a good job with like, back to movement like the difference between how unlike fancy Fantasia 2000, which we talked about, which isn't fair because of the time difference, but the sea lion like physics of their weight, like their chunkiness, as opposed to like how the octopus moved as opposed to like how the different they did a good job of like the different creatures like the whale shark versus the beluga versus the like the grouper, or whatever other big fish like compared to how the small fish move. I just thought they did a great job with like movement as well not just like lightning, right? They're always standouts,
Misha 40:52
let's bring up another fish back. So in the movie, I think Dorie calls destiny, a fish, but then Destiny refers to herself as a whale. And just so everybody knows she is a whale shark. She is a shark, not a whale.
Tyler 41:13
Well, what if she identifies this whale? Why? Well, that's just I mean, that's how she identifies. She said she speaks whale. Why? I don't know. Maybe she studied
Misha 41:25
children. No, this is bullshit. They are just they just don't know what the fuck they're doing. I'm really annoyed by it. She is a shark. She is the whale sharks are the largest. This. These are. This is good. These are non human animal. Tyler. She is a shark. She is the largest fish. Yep. Not her individually. But whale sharks are the largest fish species. They can grow up to 33 feet in length. That's very big for fish. She's not a mammal. Yeah.
Tyler 42:06
Yeah, I don't know why they did that. Yeah, cuz it was clear. They made it clear the fish shark. But then like, there was a Whole Whale talk.
Misha 42:13
Why didn't they just pick a whale?
Tyler 42:15
I don't know, they could have but also
Misha 42:17
her sizing kept changing throughout the thing. So at the beginning, she didn't notice that compared to Dory. And then later when they're split up and Dory somewhere else. And she's like, you see a shot of her from above like a bird's eye view shot. Yeah. And she's swimming towards a wall. Or maybe when they're out. I don't know. She looks huge the way they're supposed to. They're fucking huge. Anyway, I was really annoyed by that. Because, like, if I'm confused, and I understand what they are, then what's going on? Anyway? I didn't like that,
Tyler 42:53
I guess. Yeah. It's like, if you're going to go all like as far as you do to get things accurate and like, correct looking. And then like, that's a big one be fit with like that one. And also like Dory as a baby, I think is kind of a big beef. I mean, I would have had no idea but I think they should have gotten it right. If they're going to do all this research and make things look nice. I can forgive them. They're going to tropical, I
Misha 43:17
can forgive the Dory as a baby. I cannot forgive the fucking up of whales and sharks. And I just I really didn't like that.
Tyler 43:31
I don't like it. Yeah. I mean, I it didn't bother them. I was like, okay, hard, hard. They're just making a joke that like she's a shark but she thinks she's part whale or something. And I didn't really think about what they were doing. And maybe that's not maybe that's just how I read it as that and I kept so
Misha 43:47
that's the thing, like, make it that way. Make it seem like she's confused. I don't I didn't take it as her being confused.
Tyler 43:55
I think it's like a good example of like, they have too many side characters and they're not developed enough. Like yeah, we probably didn't need I love Kaitlin Olson. But we don't need to her we don't need Ty Burrell like we don't need the beluga. Oh, a whole bunch of more white actors. We don't need that. Yeah, we don't need this stuff. Like I don't need those characters movie. You could just focus more on Hank and Dory. buddy cop sort of getting through the yeah, getting through the buddy cop movie. Aquarium. Alright, so nine reset on nine for animation. Yeah, okay, let's move to music. Move to music and sound. Okay, so
Misha 44:34
to music.
Tyler 44:35
Let's let's let's muse.
Misha 44:39
So, yeah,
Tyler 44:42
I mean, I've got some things to say.
Misha 44:45
But I would like to hear what you have to say. So
Tyler 44:47
the score was quite strong again. I thought in particular, there was some moments where it was very good. I think better than the original Finding Nemo. They went door Marie is all alone like she gets sucked out to sea thinking her parents are dead she just lost Marlin Nemo the score just shifts kiss on that just so good. We got to come up with a better like Oh hot dog like something like
Misha 45:18
say hot dog
Tyler 45:21
it was so good and there are a couple other moments where the it really sold it like when the when they go to that area before they get to California they go to that area with the squid is that attacks them or tries to eat them.
Misha 45:33
Yep, the score was non existent bioluminescent squid.
Tyler 45:37
Yeah, giant Bilu that sounds good. Yeah. That's good growls and roars for some reason,
Misha 45:46
so, just so people know. Here's another fact. A giant squid who are cephalopods do not have photo fours, which is the organ that makes animals glow. With bioluminescence they don't have it. That's not so that giant squid shouldn't have been glowing. They do have beaks though and that was pretty good.
Tyler 46:12
Do you have big Sam? Do they have chromatophores
Misha 46:18
oh I don't know.
Tyler 46:18
I don't either octopi definitely do or at least some of them do most of them do Yeah, I'm not sure I guess like can do
Misha 46:29
are they do I was gonna say squid also do okay because I know cephalopods in general do but I was interval was hashtag yes all cephalopods
Tyler 46:39
yeah like mind Flayers don't for example, but there are technically aberrations they're not
Misha 46:43
they're also not real
Tyler 46:46
there are so watch your mouth speaking of which, actually funny funny thing I really liked there's this one when they come across that squid Marlon is like, if you don't need us, if you let us go out we'll worship you will build a monument and your honor that was probably like a little nod to like Lovecraft and Call of Cthulhu like the great Cthulhu who lives under the seas and stuff like that. Fuck Lovecraft racist motherfucker an asshole but like yes to Cthulhu Mythos. So yeah, anyway, I don't know if that was if that was purposeful, but it was great.
Misha 47:18
She talked about the differences between octopuses and squids.
Tyler 47:22
Sure. I mean, it might correct in that one has arms one its tentacles.
Misha 47:26
Okay, so both octopuses and squids have arms. They both have eight arms. Okay,
Tyler 47:35
but that squid have like those extra tentacles on top of it right
Misha 47:38
two extra long tentacles on top of it. Okay, so octopuses have Roundheads, squids have like pointy rocket ship heads and squid also have fins to fins on the sides of their head. Also something they have in common is that males die shortly after mating. Nice. Anyway, squids have a little beak so they'll like jumped out the way they eat is different the way they may is very different. Female octopuses yeah
Tyler 48:14
oh question
Misha 48:14
go ahead Tyler.
Tyler 48:15
Don't octopi also have beaks octopuses do
Misha 48:19
not have beaks they have like they'll jump inside where beat squids have beaks on the outside.
Tyler 48:25
Okay, that's interesting. I don't know I don't think octopuses
Misha 48:28
have beaks. Octopus mouth parts. Let's see. Yeah, there's this on the inside. You can't really see them.
Tyler 48:42
They've got mouths that makes them even scarier.
Misha 48:47
No it doesn't. squids are scarier because they got beaks you can see.
Tyler 48:53
beaks you can see worse than beats you can see back to music and sound speaking of the score was very good. However, I'm listening at the end of the fucking movie. There are two things like for at the end of the movie, they have sia singing of chandelier fame and writing for Rihanna fame singing unforgettable Yes. Why the fuck was that in there?
Misha 49:23
So strange tonally
Tyler 49:26
off yeah, totally.
Misha 49:28
So bizarre like all of a sudden we're like watching this like light hearted kids movie and all of a sudden it's like this is a dark and serious movie.
Tyler 49:37
I honestly thought that the the version I was watching because like we can cut this out but the version I was watching all the names and like labels in the movie were replaced with Cyrillic because it was like a Russian copy of the movie. The aquarium the name of every name on the map. Finding Dory was so when when it's switch I was like, did they fuck this up and take like the ending, like the wrong school. We're something we're like what's going on? It was so off. Yeah. And apparently she performed it on Ellen show. I don't know if that was like before or after like, hey my friends see is gonna sing the song like can we put this to the movie? I don't know where that was.
Misha 50:13
Well I think at the very end Dory says like forgettable it's fucking yeah and then they fucking play that song and you're like this doesn't fit anything I'd
Tyler 50:24
rather have fuckin Randy Newman with a Squeezebox going like oh
50:28
is it of our lives? It's unforgettable I would think I'm from New Orleans, but I'm not I'm from Wisconsin like
Misha 50:37
you're doing a different voice than how I would do a Randy Newman impersonation I'd be like it would be something like this but all good I love fish who forgets about this adventure was unforgettable
Tyler 50:57
you know what that brings up an interesting point and I think this that that made that just weird light bulb moment I think one problem I had sorry this is
Misha 51:06
I have flashbacks to your childhood where he
Tyler 51:10
was purple not having a flashback to RNN Konto episode and I think one problem I have with still have with the music although the music is like solid songs is I'm not a big fan. It doesn't work for me when like like input port and plot stuff is is like only in the music. Like for example like we can just cut this out but those auto gates as you mentioned it in our episode like they're easy to read there's a plot point in the fucking Spanish lyrics that if you don't get that like the movies the movie suffers because like we're only told important information through songs and I don't like them and Randy Randy Newman thing just reminded me of
Misha 51:53
a musical right like full Broadway musical because then the entire thing is delivered through song Yeah, but like in a
Tyler 52:03
song but it's like the songs I could be way off on this so somebody shout at me and and tell me I'm wrong but like I feel like in the Broadway musical part of things that I've seen it's like the the character moment or like motivation is is in the dialogue and then the song is an addition and enhancement to that no I got no okay then I'm then I'm wrong, but I feel like okay, all right.
Misha 52:27
I just feel like you asked to be shouted at until I did wrong.
Tyler 52:30
I did. Yeah. Okay, so there's that see a song also the when the when the truck launches and all the there's a slow motion with Louis Armstrong's what a wonderful world. I also didn't like that. I'm like, why are we reusing the song for like, the 5,000,000th time? They could have just why did they why that song it just Yeah, yeah, it was like, I don't know if you felt this but it was like a dramatic moment. Like their families reuniting friends who are family are uniting. The octopus is going to the ocean, which he didn't want to do, but he's sacrificing that want to have his and they're playing this fucking sappy as fucking stupid fucking song. That of course, the song is like, ironically, what a wonderful world. We're in the middle of Vietnam and racism is a thing. But it's still like that song. I have just started that song.
Misha 53:23
I knew these were I knew this is why these two songs here we're going to talk about Yeah,
Tyler 53:27
I agree. The only time I've ever liked that song isn't Good Morning Vietnam when it's like it's juxtaposed with scenes of brutal violence and like, of the war, and it's, and like the shitty things that happened in Vietnam. That was because it's but then that's even to nudge nudge.
Misha 53:42
Yeah, yeah, I think that's too much. I don't know. Yeah, I
Tyler 53:46
haven't seen that movie in a while either. But I don't know. They could have picked a different song they could have picked like, I don't know, bred
Misha 53:53
to do bed.
53:57
Fly to the air in a truck made of metal going in the ocean where the metal will erode slowly, like that weird truck. And that weird ship that we saw earlier in the movie
54:16
sorry, was it a truck? It was a Volkswagen Beetle. Rusty. Oh, crazy. Yeah. Anyway.
Tyler 54:24
I think the music this is yeah, it's just like the score was a 10. But then it goes to like an eight because of those two fucking songs. I
Misha 54:31
think. Okay, I disagree that the score was a 10. I don't think the score was a 10 to start off with.
Tyler 54:39
That was why for example, like 10 drops down significantly because those two songs really bring it down. No,
Misha 54:45
because if the songs were in there, I wouldn't be giving it a 10 and neither would you. Okay, so
Tyler 54:50
yeah, I'm just saying like a nine
Misha 54:52
and then it goes down to a seven Sure,
Tyler 54:55
sure as if you've you've never accidentally set a 10 without thinking of how ologies
Misha 55:02
fucking whites. Okay,
Tyler 55:04
so what? So I think the score is really strong. I think the score is okay, not a 10 but like it's like, I don't know, it's like eight or nine territory. It's nine and then goes down to a seven. Yes do songs. Yes. Yep. protagonist.
Misha 55:19
Okay,
Tyler 55:20
I think Dory is better than Marlon.
Misha 55:25
I am too. I thought I would hate this movie because it would be Dory focused. And in fact, I thought she was one of the stronger parts now movie.
Tyler 55:36
I agree. I totally agree. She's like, She's three dimensional. She's got a in arc and like dark night of the soul and it really goes there. I think Elon did a good job of selling the emotion. The voice acting. With the last movie, it was like Marlin and Nemo were the protagonist. Do we want to I think this one is just Dory though in Marlin and big parts of it. But there it's there a little bit less.
Misha 56:02
Maybe the name Finding Dory isn't about Marlin and Nemo Finding Dory. It's about Dory Finding Dory, gosh,
Tyler 56:12
you just blew the lid off of it because she's learning
Misha 56:16
about herself and what she's capable of doing and getting in touch with her own abilities. And finding out what her home really means and who her family is and what that means to her so kudos Disney Pixar or just Pixar Whoever named this you know, we're we made walked in with the assumption that it was somebody else Finding Dory.
Tyler 56:41
What do you think about? I mean, I think I think she's like great in this I think like an eight eight or something made
Misha 56:50
me to Tyler.
Tyler 56:53
Eight, eight. So this would be Yeah, Marlon Nemo, Bailey, Destiny. Fucking loon. What was it called? Becky?
Misha 57:04
Becky, like Becky? Hold on. Becky because she's packing a little.
Tyler 57:11
I guess what doesn't count is all that we didn't count the for example, the turtles in the last one. So we shouldn't count like the sea turtles and the Otters who are helping or all the other incidentals. But I think Hank for sure. Hank, a psychic number one Yeah. And then Destiny Bay. Marlin Nemo.
Misha 57:32
Yep.
Tyler 57:33
And maybe not even Becky is like expecting Becky's like the less than the Pelican and the last one so.
Misha 57:40
Right. Okay, so we've got Marlin Nemo, Bailey, Destiny. Yeah,
Tyler 57:46
I think baleen destiny, bring the score down because it's just too much. Yes, but Hank is really good
Misha 57:52
bank is really good. And Marlin and Nemo kind of bring the score down. Marlin anymore. Yeah,
Tyler 57:57
it's like I love Nemo, but
Misha 57:59
like they're not necessary.
Tyler 58:01
It's just too much of them like they're just a bit shoehorned in Yeah. I like how Hank gets a Hank. It's like the best line of the movie, which is like Newsflash, nobody's fine, which is really great. I hate small talk, like every Oh, how are you? Fine. Excellent. Nobody. Newsflash, nobody's flying. So good. Yeah, I don't Neil's great at being a grouch.
Misha 58:25
Yeah, yeah.
Tyler 58:26
Who else could it?
Misha 58:28
Who else could we possibly That's it.
Tyler 58:30
That's probably it. Sigourney Weaver.
Misha 58:33
She's not a sidekick. But
Tyler 58:35
she's it's just so weird that they constantly keep talking about her because her voice is the narration. It's just funny. It would be like if this cartoon took place in the Forbidden City, they'd be constantly talking about Roger Moore because he's the voice that I remember. From the Yeah, that was in 2003. So they might have changed it by now to be someone okay. I don't know if someone like fucking someone younger. But yeah, it was funny.
Misha 58:59
I don't I was seven. I don't remember who it was. Or if I heard anything.
Tyler 59:04
I said, so like, it's just such a weird pull to get Sigourney Weaver to like, have a significant role in this movie as just the narrator. It's quite funny. The role that computers use the voice of the computer kind of a side kicks. Okay, so yeah, the we talked about the score going down. Hank is strong, though.
Misha 59:24
But the majority of them are not.
Tyler 59:26
Do we think that this is like as a general rule better than Dory in the previous movie, or worse? That story,
Misha 59:35
we also had the Tank Gang. The majority of them were strong. So this is the inverse of that. So it's worse. Okay,
Tyler 59:44
so like a five.
Misha 59:46
Yeah.
Tyler 59:47
Thanks. I love Hank. But yeah,
Misha 59:49
I do too.
Tyler 59:52
Speaking of which, people often see this in a sort of post credit scene, the tank gank returns. Yeah, and they're put into the Institute. Actually, that's when I saw that I was like, oh that fucking sucks. Like why do you have to like, like ruin the message of like back to the ocean but then actually that's better because Gill can get them out of there. Whereas getting out of a plastic bag is harder for guilted like mastermind is way out clearly because they just traveled like across the fucking ocean and bags
Misha 1:00:18
I disagree with what you're saying
Tyler 1:00:20
you don't think you don't think you can get them all out of the institute?
Misha 1:00:24
That sounds like so much work aren't they fucking tired and want to just live a peaceful life Why don't you agree with that which are them to like?
Tyler 1:00:31
Well that was my first thought but then I was like okay, well
Misha 1:00:33
the plastic bags are easier because you just asked the puffer fish to but
Tyler 1:00:38
they've they've just traveled across the Pacific from like Australia to California in these plastic bags and didn't didn't do that die somehow didn't die somehow also didn't get out so my thinking is so oxygen
Misha 1:00:50
left in those bags. Yeah,
Tyler 1:00:53
it doesn't make a lot of food have arrived dead my thing I would like to think that like, like if we're going to hope that Bailey the beluga doesn't die immediately upon going to the Great Barrier Reef. One must one must picture Sisyphus happy one was picture Gill able to get his friends to safety. For my sanity. I have to picture that as a possibility. All right,
Misha 1:01:12
fine. Yeah. If you say so. Um,
Tyler 1:01:17
you know what I liked about this? Actually, this.
Misha 1:01:19
I think animals die from stress. Right? I do know that I just this it's not just like physical conditions. No, no, I know. I know. So they're they're all dead. Gil just goes oh fuck and dies.
Tyler 1:01:33
Right? Well, thanks for ruining my fantasy. You're welcome. Anyway, villain is the next category. The first thing I wanted to say is we can talk about this obviously but one thing I that popped up as I was looking at the screen is that this movie doesn't have as many humans like prominently in it. There are a lot of humans running around like the park and like they're like background but like in the last one, the dentist was like front and center and what Darla Darla gross. metal mouth grows braces. Hey, I had braces. I can say that. All right. Yeah, so anyway, I liked that. There weren't a lot of humans and when we did see them like we didn't have to look at their stupid faces the other day
Misha 1:02:15
too. They're too gross. Oh, there was one kid who was running away from the touch tank when it got all inky. Yeah, terrifying, terrible animation. I was like this is a fucking zombie running away or something. So villain who are the villains?
Tyler 1:02:34
There is no there isn't like it's again. It's like, people. There aren't anyone? Yeah, like there isn't really one in the story. So it's like, it's like, you know? Yeah, it's a one. Yeah.
Misha 1:02:47
And this one's a little bit different because you have and while although it is an aquarium, there is a benefit to having organizations that do rehabilitation and release rescue rehabilitation and release and so they're not as villainous as just the pet trade.
Tyler 1:03:12
So there yeah, there really isn't. So there's no yeah, there's no speaking of which, like sorry to jump back to a sidekick but another just a little this doesn't this doesn't affect the score but it's just another like a little annoyance that I have Bailey the beluga whale when he when we first meet him and destiny and they're talking to Dory he says what are like Dory mentions like that Echolocation is like the the world's best classes. And Bailey says what are glasses then later jump fast forward later into the movie when he's using the echolocation to help that he says yeah, he says the world well that's learned with glasses means the problem I have is he doesn't know what glasses are but he says things like they're going on the interstate the fuzzer after them like I just it really bothers me in movies when like I don't know it's like a weird cultural dissonance or how does he know what police are? Because there aren't How does he not only know police are but knows to say fuzz but he doesn't know what glasses are? Especially because they're in a fucking aquarium in people all over the place was
Misha 1:04:17
dumb reasons why you're wrong. Do you want me to do that? This is the smallest thing that doesn't matter.
Tyler 1:04:23
It's just I want I want you to just say like oh, okay that that your your your little
Misha 1:04:28
I disagree. You know why? Because he's heard humans at the aquarium talk about police and the FAS and maybe they've had police do a raid at
Tyler 1:04:37
the aquarium never seen someone wearing and you're talking about my glasses
Misha 1:04:42
people wearing glasses? No, never. I broke
Tyler 1:04:44
my glasses. Ever. Hey, put your glasses on. Never. All right. Well, I guess you could have just said like I I don't agree with your gripe but I respect it. Let's move on instead. Back Did you gotta rip me a new butthole or henchman one yeah there's no henchmen there's no villain. Strong Female Lead though.
Misha 1:05:08
So much better. Yeah, Dory is the lead. She is driving the whole movie in this one she is making decisions. People support her way of doing things and look to her even Nemo is like what would Dory do? Yeah. WW
Tyler 1:05:30
D Day WWF D D she is strong. She's like, you know she is empathetic and caring and like she's she's hurt her humor is better in this too because it's not as like what is that is grading like yeah, it's
Misha 1:05:50
not just the say like really repetitive. She has offers a lot more. The mom even the dads like, Ah, sure you can't do anything and Marlins are gone. No one can do anything. And her mom was like, well, she's just different. And that's a good thing because she's herself like we need to trust in her abilities because she's her own fish. And I liked that her mom is a good role model too for other people. So during season, Diane Keaton
Tyler 1:06:21
so many wasted talent to this movie,
Misha 1:06:23
like that's the thing. I mean, anyway, yeah.
Tyler 1:06:27
So this is not a so so far. We don't have many strong female leads so far, but we've got Belle buting the beast got an eight out of 10 MEREDITH got a nine out of 10 and brave. Mirabelle got a 10 Out 10 Out of 10 I think Dory is like a little bit. Not as high as Mirabelle, probably but she's pretty she's like she Yeah, she's pretty strong. Yeah, I think she's maybe deserves a nine.
Misha 1:06:54
I agree. I think she's a nine. Awesome. Yeah,
Tyler 1:06:58
cool. A Dory. Yeah. I also do I don't know if I mentioned this in the last episode, but I do like her like weird daydreams talking in her sleep that she does, even though it's like kind of silly, but when she's the sea monkeys don't like my lunch money. And what did this one she says, like clouds, clouds. The something is drooping. I forget what she says. But the other thing
Misha 1:07:17
that makes her strong is that she trusts herself throughout the whole Yeah. Where people tried to tell her no, you can't do this. You shouldn't do that. Stop what you're doing and she just listens to her own inner wisdom. And I love that. Yeah.
Tyler 1:07:32
Yeah. But she also they do a nice thing of like, showing that she does have doubts and she does doubt yourself but, but in the end, she's like, okay, and she like goes through her process of what I do now and she solves it so she doesn't need like Marlin to come savor or Hank to come save
Misha 1:07:48
her finds her parents she decides to go save. Marlin and Nemo. Yeah, she's courageous. And I like that. Yeah, good. Yeah,
Tyler 1:07:58
she's really good. bipoc representation slash portrayal. So again, pretty low. Yeah, we've we've got some voice actors at least one but
Misha 1:08:11
a Juris Alba's the only one and they came a literal Black Sea Lion. Okay, I don't know.
Tyler 1:08:22
Like what did you think about that whole Sealine bit that they did like two times too many? I liked it the first time but then they kept doing the off off off.
Misha 1:08:32
I like to see like goes back like I
Tyler 1:08:36
just thought maybe they did it once too many like at the end when the the unibrow just tries
Misha 1:08:42
to catch that sea line. Whole thing about? I don't
Tyler 1:08:46
know. It's all about I mean, it's much like we talked about like villainizing characters who were to Pais and fantasy and vintage 2000 unit if you have a unibrow down fucking idiot. Yeah.
Misha 1:09:00
It was weird. I didn't like that part.
Tyler 1:09:04
But it also looked too much like that weird Sloth from Ice Age movie. I fucking ate but but I did like this like weird like, there's like just sleeping and then they're like, off off
1:09:15
get off a rocket. It's kind of funny. Because the lines are funny. Yeah,
Tyler 1:09:18
they are. I liked him. Yeah, I just thought like, they didn't need that in credit scene when they did it once more, but that's my opinion. Anyway, bipoc representations like one is this just one? Yeah.
Misha 1:09:30
Does right and a supporting character? Not even one of the sidekicks. Yeah, it was kind of disappointing, because it's 2013. Yeah. All right, and
Tyler 1:09:44
I don't think they're just running through. Yeah. Ty Burrell Whitesell. Antonio, white as hell
Misha 1:09:49
all of the main characters in white. Very white.
Tyler 1:09:52
They didn't wait. Dominic West. Oh, from the two I love how they're both from the wire both of the sea lions to me Yeah, yeah. Okay. All right. Fun Factor.
Misha 1:10:06
I thought this was less fun. I
Tyler 1:10:10
thought it was less fun than Finding Nemo. I think it's because of the fun. Yeah, I think it's like I think it's, it's like dumb fun. It's like it's all action and comedy. But
Misha 1:10:23
the thing is, it's long and if the story isn't interesting, you're going to lose interest in what's happening regardless of Yeah,
Tyler 1:10:33
what I did. I did for sure. Yeah, even when the shenanigans are like odd, cute otters, distracting cars, and the otters are very cute, but it was like, just want like just didn't need bla bla bla bla bla bla bla,
Misha 1:10:51
for a fact and other perfect furry furry facts, but not about furries people that dress up for the reasons that they dress up your
Tyler 1:11:00
reasons. Whatever reasons you wish.
Misha 1:11:04
Sea otters have little pouches, little skin flaps that they use so when they go diving for food and little yum YUM's, they can store extra Num Nums in their pockets. Indeed, later because they're so hungry.
Tyler 1:11:20
I knew that one. And do you know why I knew that one? Because I've told you that one. You told me that one because it will the audience doesn't know your character has a familiar or companion cork through otter who does that so I learned that way. Yeah. Okay, he uses them as like little projectile grenades sometimes, but that rarely happens because we don't play often and we forget everything we I
Misha 1:11:44
know I think about cork all the time. Just so you know. And I get nervous and scared for him and I don't want him to come out and get hurt and so that's true. That's threatened him
Tyler 1:11:56
I did promise like episode one or two that I would never kill him. Yeah, cuz I know that you would like fly swim over to Turkey and strangle I would. You would definitely not take a plane you would swim. The extra effort to like like stove stove up
Misha 1:12:14
would actually build up and I would hear the ocean. Somebody
Tyler 1:12:19
Sam? Yeah, steam. Like blow blow in your stack? Yeah, I blow by stack. Can I give a perfect? Yeah, this one is this one is more widely known. So this is probably not surprising anyone but otters hold their hands when they're sleeping. So they don't like lose each other. Which is really cute. It's really It's
Misha 1:12:40
so cute. So cute. So cute. Okay, here's another fun fact. This is actually a perfect. Sea otters have the densest hair of any mammal. 1 million hairs per square inch. is insane. It keeps them they don't have blubber. So they have they blow air into their fur for insulation. And they have to groom these always
Tyler 1:13:08
grooming and assume grooming. Yeah, that's true. And
Misha 1:13:11
they do that to keep because if dirt gets in there, it doesn't create the air pocket that keeps them warm and cold, cold waters. So they got to have nice clean first, so they'll blow air into it clean out there for all the time to stay warm. humans only have about 100,000 hair follicles on our entire head. So that gives you an idea
Tyler 1:13:35
somebody to get some idea.
Misha 1:13:36
Frickin thick sea otter Harris, which adds sounds really good. They are. Yeah. One time actually when Steve and I were at Monterey Bay, we were looking out was it maybe it was somewhere else we were looking out the deck and there was a sea otter floating grooming grooming stop looked at us to make sure we noticed how cute it was. And actually made eye contact and then went back to grooming Stop. Look at us. But I'm still here. You still there? We do back to grooming is very cute.
Tyler 1:14:12
anymore. Yeah, let's get fun. Let's get fun factor. So, okay. I mean, it's, I'm just sure I had to compare it to other movies we've seen it's, it's more fun than and then fucking Fantasia poor Fantasia. Cuz phantom because Fantasia
Misha 1:14:38
into that's so different.
Tyler 1:14:40
I think it's more it's more enjoyable than I see you're hovering over Dumbo. It's
Misha 1:14:44
it is more fun than Dumbo. Sure. What's a four? It's
Tyler 1:14:51
I think it's less. It's I don't know. It may be equal to encantado I think it's about the same incanto wasn't it? didn't think it was very fun was
Misha 1:15:00
really sad. Yeah, I would say it's just as fun as that it's not sad, but it's just kind of
Tyler 1:15:07
all right. Yeah, I think a four makes sense because also Atlantis was a four. I'm looking now and four works it's it's so close to being like an eight though if they just made a couple of tweaks to the story, I think and like you say, could be like an eighth or something to say.
Misha 1:15:25
We're giving it a four but it's so close to an eight.
Tyler 1:15:30
It is I do think so. Yeah, like it could be so much more fun. If they just took some parts out of it, mate and trim that story and tighten it up. Then it would be like it'd be a rip roaring pace. It'd be fun and
Misha 1:15:42
very slow. Yeah. All right. And
Tyler 1:15:47
then take those totally off songs out of it and then then you've got like an eight or nine tone baby
Misha 1:15:54
and you got yourself a stew going you've
Tyler 1:15:56
ever got to stood it never once yeah doesn't sit right and he doesn't sit right do we give a negative point for the UFC
Misha 1:16:08
sector? Black in color animal portrayed by the one black race actor Yeah, yeah, one
Tyler 1:16:20
negative one effervescence. I think it should get a little bit for like the the animation the sea creatures, right, the magic of the coral colony and
Misha 1:16:36
the right thing
Tyler 1:16:37
I do.
Misha 1:16:40
A lot of it did not take place in the ocean.
Tyler 1:16:43
Now, the use of Sigourney Weaver in such a special way. I couldn't use more of her though. Last 40 waiver, but
Misha 1:16:52
I don't think it's as I don't think it's as effervescent as Finding Nemo and Finding Nemo only got two points.
Tyler 1:17:01
Why the fuck did that happen again? Remind me because
Misha 1:17:04
it just didn't. We didn't feel it. So that's how it goes. Okay, I
Tyler 1:17:08
would say maybe similar to then.
Misha 1:17:10
I would say one. I think it's less effervescent, right. Because it's a sequel. That
Tyler 1:17:14
makes sense. It's less special than the original doing that thing.
Misha 1:17:17
Yeah. So because with the coral reef, like one of the things that I really loved about Finding Nemo is the opening to the coral reef at the beginning, and you just really feel like you're there and I really loved the ocean parts of it. And this doesn't take place in the ocean now. You're just kind of like, out and about in tanks and stuff. Yeah, that's I don't think this should get any effervescence. Okay, but if you want to give it a point, if you felt effervescent. If it gave you that, I guess Yeah, I
Tyler 1:17:49
guess. I guess. No, it didn't. It's just I thought the animation was really special. So yeah, very high score. Zero for effervescence is fine.
Misha 1:18:00
Yep. All right. You ready to find out how this movie?
Tyler 1:18:03
Do you think it did scored higher than the original or lower?
Misha 1:18:07
I think it is going to be around the same.
Tyler 1:18:12
I think it's going to be marginally higher. A little bit higher. I think I'd gotten like a six John.
Misha 1:18:20
Female Lead helps.
Tyler 1:18:24
Yeah, yeah. It'd be low 60s. We'll see. All right,
Misha 1:18:28
ready? Yep.
Tyler 1:18:29
Ready?
Misha 1:18:30
Oh, oh my God. We are both wrong. It got 10 points worse than Finding Nemo. Okay. Okay. originality, it dropped down. Dropped down. I'm confused because that's it. Are we doing the back? Fun
Tyler 1:18:47
Factor drawing down? Okay. I guess. Yeah. Like, it seems like it was doing better. But yeah, I think it is a sequel. So. Yeah.
Misha 1:18:57
Good. That is good. That it's not better than the original, because I didn't think it was.
Tyler 1:19:05
