Tyler 00:36
Oh, ma
Misha 00:41
Can you believe it? That was Misha, I'm your host Misha, and I'm not Scottish.
Tyler 00:46
And your other host Tyler. I am also not Scottish. Wow. Wow. Misha, coming in hot with some hot accents. Wow.
Misha 00:58
Yeah, it was. Can you believe it? That was really difficult to do.
Tyler 01:01
Oh, yeah. Yeah, I can't do accents.
Misha 01:03
Yeah, no, I'm that was really hard.
Tyler 01:06
I don't want to say I'm impressed. I'm, I'm, I'm speechless. I'm speechless. That's what I'll say.
Misha 01:12
It tells me you're impressed.
Tyler 01:14
I'm in I'm impressed. I can. Oh, man, that is good. So for those who didn't pick up on the context clues this week, we are looking at the movie Brave. Pixar is brave from I don't remember. It's 2011 2012. Yeah. So it should be a report on time, if you can tell from the beginning that but before we get into it, I actually had a little something. I just, it's not that important. But I just wanted to bring it up because we forgot to talk about it in the last episode about bolt. That harrowing psychological horror that we watched. But my favorite part of that movie was that part when bolt was running are in New York and other dogs. snifters but it was really funny. I loved it. And we just didn't talk about it. So I wanted to mention, it was really funny. But sniffing but sort of a because bolt was like what the fuck you guys doing? Like, because he did she never
Misha 02:14
miss an opportunity to talk about but sniffing Yeah, yeah.
Tyler 02:19
So yeah, so here we are talking about Brave 2012 Brave and before we get into the plot, and and all the different things about the movie, which were covered with your introduction there. We have different categories that we go over we look at originality, story, animation, music and sound or music and like the sound effects is stuff like that protagonist, sidekick villain henchmen if there are any sometimes there aren't strong female lead bipoc representation slash portrayal and fun factor and then we have negative points for doesn't sit right. Or bonus points for effervescence, that special spicy Disney magic, giving us a total score out of 110 points. Why 110 Some people might ask or may have asked or will ask. Well, because hundreds boring that's why and suck it 100 And so far, we've got
Misha 03:25
Bambi and a Goofy Movie are tied for first play. Yeah,
Tyler 03:30
so we'll see how this movie goes. So before we
Misha 03:34
take the lead can brave take the lead? Who knows?
Tyler 03:38
Oh, no, no until the end. We won't know till the end. And we we do we tabulate because we've clearly proven on this show that Tyler does not know math. At least at least I don't know math. So Mr. I start with you. Yes, you do. Start
Misha 03:53
with that. I did win the math award in ninth grade. So I got a medal to prove it. Boom.
Tyler 03:59
I went to the state geography bee in Arizona. That's my claim to fame. That's the furthest you went to it that the you want any fight and win it. I was like, I think I was top Wente or maybe I don't remember, but I definitely didn't win it. That's for sure. Yeah, but that's the closest I've been to fame, like pastiche. It was a geography bee. Oh, I
Misha 04:27
do totally didn't listen, and I just was like, yeah, a spelling bee.
Tyler 04:31
I was in a spelling bee too, but I wasn't as good as spelling to too much thinking. Anyway, speaking of thinking, should we get into your wonderful summary of the movie, bro? Yeah,
Misha 04:44
what happened to it? Okay, so it takes place in Scotland, however many years ago, there's a princess. She doesn't want to get married but she's betrothed at the ripe old age of 16 when children should be getting married. She gets into a fight with her mom because her mom wants her to be like a pretty pretty princess who is well behaved. So she gets into a fight slices some tapestry goes into the woods on Angus, her horse meets a witch. The witch casts gives her a quiche and the quiche is sort of quiche event. She calls it a quiche. It looks more like a tart, but she I think she called it a quiche.
Tyler 05:24
Okay, I missed that.
Misha 05:27
Yeah, so she gives her a magic quiche that turns her mother into a bear. It's in the bear Kingdom where everybody hates bears and their only Mo is to fucking murder bears for whatever reason, because of one more duel. And so anyway, her she turns her mom into a bear, she has to get her mom back into human form. They have to go repair that tapestry that she sliced. And the dad tries to kill the mom. Because he thinks she's just a regular old bear. And he hates bears and he's the Bear King. So he's got to kill all the bears. tries to kill her murder, the princess saves her mom. Her mom turns into a human again, and everyone loves each other.
Tyler 06:15
I totally missed that plot, by the way where he's like, I'll kill you with my bare hands. I totally missed that until you just mentioned it. Yeah, it was Yeah, man.
Misha 06:23
I rolled my eyes it wasn't great. Oh, and the three ugly brothers turn into bear cubs. Ugly bear cubs?
Tyler 06:31
Yes. That's very ugly. Weirdly cartoonish bear. It's really weird because like the we'll get into this with maybe animation but the bears looks realistic. Like pretty realistic, but then we're so good. But then the three little shitheads when they turned into bear cubs, they look like it or
Misha 06:50
is it because the mom was kind of pretty to begin with. And then the boys were kind of ugly to begin with. So they're like God keywords? I
Tyler 06:57
don't know. But they looked like cartoon bears. That didn't even look like real bear cubs, which is just kind of weird. Really? Yeah. And they had those like, massive like heads like that cartoons have not like I mean, this is a cartoon, but you know what I mean? They didn't look realistic.
Misha 07:13
They could have used it as an opportunity to make them super adorbs and they didn't Yeah, they didn't.
Tyler 07:19
The reason why that's pretty good. Yeah, the only thing I was gonna add was that they the king while he hates bears really badly but the main reason he's going hard in the paint to try to kill the mom bear at the end is because he thinks that the bear killed his wife they're hurt because right Her room was destroyed the dresses with and she's missing
Misha 07:41
they hated bears the whole time hated bears the
Tyler 07:44
whole time. Yeah, even it's gonna stink please bear haters
Misha 07:47
What the fuck is this movie about why who decided they hate there's
Tyler 07:52
well because there's this baby I don't know but the Demon Bear more took his foot so then he goes all Captain Ahab on them and like
Misha 08:01
that's like It's like in Lord of the Rings The movie when some people say more door more more door Yeah, I'm not gonna lie but yes
Tyler 08:14
so instead of the plot as movie being throw the mom bear to the fiery pits of Mount Doom. They have to confront more due to
Misha 08:24
Yeah, I don't even understand why they have to confront more do at all.
Tyler 08:28
Oh, they don't have to. He just fucking shows up to clean house and kill him. Ah, yeah, yeah, we'll get we'll get into Oh,
Misha 08:37
yeah, you Yay. Okay. Yeah, well, he
Tyler 08:39
Yeah, he just shows up to like rock house because he's like a possessed bear. No,
Misha 08:44
he's not a possessed bear. He fucking put arrows in hammer when he turned and tried to kill him too. And he's pissed and I'd be pissed too. I want to go and eat every single one of those dumb humans. He has a whole bunch he looks like a hedgehog. Yeah, he looks like you know what he looks like you know in bullfighting which should be banned in the whole world that's what he fucking looks like
Tyler 09:08
when they've got the yeah the things that the Picador is put in the back as the stepping stone
Misha 09:13
rose oh this this Spears yep it's all the way I see
Tyler 09:19
your point the the reason I said like possessed was because he was a cursed king that was power hungry and then but he was like a bad dude though turned into a bear and they keep mentioning in like plot like the plot summaries online they keep calling him a Demon Bear so maybe it's just like a conspiracy against this dude. Possibly. I
Misha 09:42
think it is. Seriously if I if I had people coming after me and had arrows in my back and scars. Did you see all his scars? Somebody needs a bear hug. Give him some honey. Just like take the arrows out of his back put some like Sal Have on it to like, you know, help them heal some Neosporin boom, you got rid of your bear problem by helping the bear. Yeah.
Tyler 10:06
He also had some like wicked like, he looked kind of like those really crazy scary looking chimpanzees that don't have like hair covering all their bodies because he was like, part of his body was like either scar scarred over Yeah, yeah,
Misha 10:23
cuz scar tissue can't You can't grow hair on scar tissue and it's really sad.
Tyler 10:27
Like that. Like that red hot chili pepper song. Crickets
Misha 10:33
No, wait now. Yeah. nucleate Sure.
Tyler 10:39
Scar tissue that I wish you saw that one. Sarcastic mister though. Oh,
Misha 10:45
wow. Can you can you sing some more please?
Tyler 10:48
I think that's all I know. Because that from it's from Californication that album. Oh, I
Misha 10:55
wasn't correct. Same,
Tyler 10:57
not the same song. Oh, anyway, screw them with their sock. wieners what does that mean? They used to like perform shows with nothing. No clothes, except just socks on their wieners
Misha 11:12
What about their balls hanging out with their?
Tyler 11:14
I think they put their balls of the socks to probably
Misha 11:22
teeny tiny balls.
Tyler 11:24
That's what that's well, I don't I don't know if that's maybe they have massive balls. Who knows? Who knows? I don't know what Anthony Kiedis Do you see this his balls situation is?
Misha 11:34
I mean, you should if you know about their wiener and sock situation.
Tyler 11:39
Well that's because I watched the Behind the Music episode on VHS one back in the day, so I know too much. I gotta look this up. But it's a similar thing in movies like in Hollywood when they have nude scenes. The they have these like, modesty pouches that like your your your beans and Franks go in the little pouch. Yeah, but that's not a tube sock. No, but it's a similar type thing. You put it in the old pouch and then just thing
Misha 12:05
I bet they act but there's like a little extra pouch for the ball sewn in because you can't fit the balls and the Wiener ZOC
Tyler 12:15
Well, it's we're talking big tube size. athletic socks. I don't know either. I did
Misha 12:20
socks. I wish I had one to like, pick up do like this big, little little size of a small mango
Tyler 12:27
know, athletic socks. Like like, old timey basketball paw basketball player sock. What's a Papa?
Misha 12:34
What's a Piper? You gotta look up Papa trees. It says glorious native tree to this region. And I'm in New York. And they and like, you know, I don't know all of the Northeast you should Popeyes and they make a little fruit? That's a little bit smaller than a mango. And they're creamy.
Tyler 12:55
Yeah, I don't how do you spell Papa? Like,
Misha 12:57
like the way you would expect to spell pop? Ah.
Tyler 13:01
Well, like the the possum lawyer.
Misha 13:06
Oh, I've seen these. Bear like a bear paw.
Tyler 13:09
I have Well, yes. A Bear Paw. Paw Paws. Yeah, same spelling. Yeah, it's talking about we're talking about brave. We're talking about more to do and his scar tissue. So yeah, let's get into it. Let's get into it. Originality. Now for once. Well for twice because Goofy Movie we have a movie that's like pretty original.
Misha 13:35
Yeah, I would say so. Except the idea of Princess doesn't want to get married is not a very original. It felt right. It felt like it's a story redone in Scotland in with Scottish clans. And that's it. Yeah, like that in the same thing. She doesn't want to get married to a prince and they have to prove themselves and she's betrothed at the age of 16.
Tyler 14:01
Yeah, except that movie wasn't about Jasmine in this movie is about. About the right the princess. So but you're right. The conceit is not new, but like the curse and the mom. I mean, we'll get into like the actual plot in a second. But like, I thought it was like yeah, relatively. I mean to new, like original ish for Disney. Yeah, no. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, but most of the Disney things we watched like Alice in Wonderland and Aladdin and in Christmas Carol, they've just redo Yeah, a lot of them have right? So I mean, I'm not talking like an eight or nine or anything here but like, I don't know, like, like I think it's like as original as I think that's maybe
Misha 14:47
two original. Okay, as original as a Goofy Movie.
Tyler 14:52
I was gonna say as original as Yeah, as original as Goofy because Atlantis was a five.
Misha 14:57
Right? I would say it's more original. than Atlanta. It's
Tyler 15:00
yeah, it's it's not super original, but it's more original than Atlanta because Atlanta is has been a so
Misha 15:05
yeah, the six I would say it ties with a Goofy movie in a bug's.
Tyler 15:10
But uh, but yeah, Bug's Life didn't get it high score too because A Bug's Life is a often told story about like, peasants slash farmers slash villagers down on their luck with bandits coming into the same for this kind of Yeah, sure. I think six is six is good. Yeah. Great. All right. All right. So, so story. Yeah. I got you kind of touched on pieces of it already. But yeah, what are you?
Misha 15:37
Okay, I'm kind of annoyed that they don't like bears. I also found it a little boring.
Tyler 15:44
What in particular was was boring to just like whole thing or a
Misha 15:48
princess doesn't want to get married. She runs away. She it's just it felt kind of, okay, it felt simultaneously very slow and very quick. Right. So each scene felt very long. But the interesting things like the witch, why did we get more witchy scenes? Yeah, why did we get more like the supernatural stuff? I don't know. It just felt like too much time was spent on these fucking fighting clans that have are so irrelevant to the plot. Right? Or to like what we care about. I don't like the fighting scene at the beginning. And like I felt like that went on
Tyler 16:28
for way too long. The fighting scene at the beginning be didn't have to have when they Oh, when he loses his when when the king loses his foot Oh, the when the when the suitors come the clans.
Misha 16:39
And the clans show up for the first time. And they're just like, we didn't really need any of that. And I would have liked to see more about the transition of Maratha. Really like more about the relationship between her and her mother growing. But instead it was just about these fucking clans fighting. Yeah.
Tyler 17:10
Yeah, it's like, it's interesting, because like, the whole sort of main thrust of the plot is mom gets turned into a bear and they need to deal with that. But that doesn't pop up until like, almost 40 minutes into the movie. Like, yeah, to the point where a lot of critics were like, calling it a plot twist. And like, I think Leonard Maltin of all people called it like a plot twist. Like that shouldn't have been that's a plot twist. That was like, that was like, that's the movie. That's the crux of the movie. Yeah.
Misha 17:38
Yeah.
Tyler 17:39
Yeah, I agree with you on that thing.
Misha 17:41
The other thing, what was I gonna say? About the mom like being a bear? Like, yeah, come on more mom, Bear. She was awesome. And that was the best animation which we'll get into. Not the best. But it was really good animation. Like just that whole, the whole plot and the whole point of the movie was shortened too much. So we're how you have to sit through a lot of stuff. Just to get to that. And I, it just seemed like, so the movie is called Brave. And it's about her, I guess, being brave with her mother. And at the end, she's like, does the voiceover and I'm just like rolling my eyes because she's like, I learned to be brave. I'm like, No, you didn't she didn't do anything. Yeah, like, where's that transition of? Maratha? Yeah, the whole fucking movie is supposed to be about how she learns about the importance of her culture and tradition, and being a good role model and like, coming into her queendom when she gets to that, but we don't actually see any of that. Yep,
Tyler 18:54
it's a big part of it. To the point to the fact to the point where like, it kind of bleeds into the strong female lead category I think we can go over now. I think she she's like, it's almost like Pixar because this was Pixar his first female lead not Disney's but but Pixar is. And it's like they they wanted to, like, shoot really show a strong female lead like like Maratha is a very strong young woman. But like, yes, but the problem is they didn't give her anything to do or is anything to really want
Misha 19:37
nothing grew up like she's Yeah, bro. And there's no growth or she
Tyler 19:41
is she's a strong character that like her. Her motivation is she wants to keep shooting bows and arrows and riding horses and being herself and there's no like, yeah, there's no way for her to grow in this plot. Like there's no yeah, it's just like her and her mother coming to a better understanding which is nice. That part is like that's no bravery. But the brave thing well, she is brave I but I don't get this like the bravery is inside you. Meritus fucking brave. Yeah.
Misha 20:09
No. Okay, you're right. She is no growth in that. Uh, yeah,
Tyler 20:15
yeah. Yeah. Yeah, no, exactly this, I'm saying there's no, there's no like, for example, you know, we're gonna get to these lovely fucking
Misha 20:23
movie Brave, like have that sort of be the crux of like, it's not physical bravery. But it's like this emotional bravery and finding your inner strength to like, understand that you can be nuanced and be like, it's nice that there's no romantic interest because sometimes they force that into things. But I just feel like, like, the scenes where she is brave, it's just like, physical bravery. And she's good at archery. And she's like, good at horseback riding, which I think is very cool. But it's not. It's like sort of irrelevant to the plot.
Tyler 21:02
Yeah, for sure. I totally agree. It's like they're showing her as brave and it's all like, merited merit as bravery is merited. Like, she's braver than, you know, I would like when she first sees more do the first thing she does is shoot it like she doesn't like freeze and tear or run. And she like she free solos, a Chaussee wet rock face, like, like death defying free soloing, props to her. But it's like, but you're right. It's all like, I don't know if this is the right word to use, but it's all like, female empowerment by showing she's a tomboy and like, and it's Yeah, and it's fine to have those like interests, but it's like, I feel like it I feel like there was a misstep or something because like they didn't show her like, like they didn't show her growing and other ways. And point
Misha 21:53
what they should have done is shown why the mom or the queen is the strong character and not just like this weak person who's on the side and they kind of do that, where it's like, the husband or the king is acting like a fucking idiot and she like steps in. But like, you never see marital learning that lesson where you can be a strong you can be yourself, you can be strong when you are married. And when you're a queen, she just is like, repairs the like, I love my mom repair the tapestry. Oh, okay. And this is like, wait, no, you're supposed to learn why your mom is your role model not just your dad.
Tyler 22:32
Well, there is also like a ham fisted speech she gives to unite like when when they're trying to sneak the mom bear upstairs. She gives that speech. You remember that? I think is the moment where the movie is trying to make us see that she's grown emotionally, but it's really ham fisted. And like, not done well.
Misha 22:51
We don't actually see the growth. Yeah, like I want it to before that scene, see her get to that realization where her mom is the strong character who in my opinion, probably leads the fucking clans. Right? Because the dad is just sort of like I'll just do this like strong stuff. Yeah. Yeah,
Tyler 23:17
I feel Yeah, it does. Mom's dirty a little bit. On the one hand it's nice to see like like with a Goofy movie. It was nice to see this like father son relationship. And it was nice to see that like mother daughter bond, but I feel like they did the mom dirty a little bit. And then yeah, like, like
Misha 23:33
Goofy Movie. You see that change? Yeah, there's a change. There's growth. It's their growth in both of that right? And you don't get that that's okay. That's a perfect Yeah. Movie to relate this to how they blew it in this
Tyler 23:48
now I wonder if this is this. This is my hypothesis for why the plot actually before I get into that there are a couple of just quick other things I wanted to mention to complain about the plot. When the mom turns into a bear. You know, they're they camp out. And then the next day they find out oh, we've got two days to fix this problem. Then they spend the whole day in like a river montage. We're wasting a whole fucking day.
Misha 24:12
I have. I asked I asked the same question. Why are they wasting time just fucking eating? Yeah, they just also they were waiting around for the blue wisps to show up. Yeah. No plan. All they had to do was fucking repair that tapestry. Go back leave the mom. Why did they bring the mom to the castle?
Tyler 24:35
Well, they didn't. They didn't. They didn't Well, because here's the thing. I think I understand why they didn't know that they had to repair the tapestry until they got to more dues layer which they were led there by the will of the wisps will come back to the will of the wisps in a second and then and then once they will get there. Once Once they figure out they need to repair the tapestry then they head back to the castle because Marat is thinking, if we repair it, you're good. Like so we'll just go back to the castle. You know, like, that is relatable good
Misha 25:07
Out in the fucking woods and then she can walk back as a human. But I feel like that's barren. Let her just sit and eat some fish. I
Tyler 25:16
feel like that's her well, because they don't want her to turn further into a bear. That wouldn't be a bad thing.
Misha 25:21
Don't let her just sit right outside the castle twiddle. Well, she goes in repairs it boom. I
Tyler 25:26
don't know. I think that that part is like forgivable because they're like, in the heat of the moment. They're thinking we gotta go together to go fix that because the mom is the seamstress. Right? Not married anyway, although merit is able to fix it while writing full GAAP. Anyway, the so? No, so
Misha 25:44
this job referred back to Yeah,
Tyler 25:47
I don't know. I mean, that that's forgivable, like they're rushing back to like, fix the problem. And they don't think about they don't think about the the logistics of it. That makes sense. But like, you're totally back to what you said before, like the pacing is all off on the movie. And then there's the matter of the will of the wisps. And how like magic as a, like a device is used in this movie in a really really so clumsy way. I
Misha 26:10
think we can talk about this, or not when we get to animation, but did you think the will of the wisps? Looked like Jim Carrey as the Ghost of Christmas Present?
Tyler 26:20
I don't I didn't think that until you mentioned that. But now I'm sorry. I know I see it. Yeah.
Misha 26:26
Are they look exactly the same? Except Jim Carrey was yellow and these are blue and I feel nauseous talking about? I
Tyler 26:36
didn't even think about that. Yeah, but I'm seeing it now. You're totally right. They're little fucking Swaim Jim Carrey. sperms. Yeah, let? And I here's the thing. Okay. So the main problem with this movie is not is not the main character or like the relationship. It's the plot, and how they should have developed that relationship through the blood. And I think my hypothesis and also how magic is really clumsily used in the witches barely in it. I think here's my
Misha 27:07
hypothesis, so bummed that the witch is barely in it. Yeah. I loved her little chin beard.
Tyler 27:13
Yeah, her chin beard was so good. I wanted more out of the the the crow or the Raven beard. The I wanted more chin beard. Yeah, I wanted more like old lady chin beard, of course. And
Misha 27:24
that Raven was really great.
Tyler 27:26
He's great. He had an annoying voice but he was okay. He's great. He's he's no. Raven from sleeping.
Misha 27:34
Raven.
Tyler 27:36
He's no Raven. That's for goddamn Sure. Oh, man, I was really hoping that I'd be the first person to say that. So Raven on this podcast, God fucking dammit.
Misha 27:45
Sorry,
Tyler 27:46
Misha one Tyler zero. What was I gonna say? Oh, my hypothesis for why the plot was all janky because the original director of the movie was a woman named Brenda Chapman. And she was replaced by because of creative differences between her and Andrews. Yeah, she was replaced because of creative differences, quote, unquote, with her and John Lasseter, who later was was cancelled for sexual harassment of his employees. So yeah, yeah. Holy
Misha 28:22
shit. That's big news for Caitlyn down for this podcast.
Tyler 28:26
Yeah, he went down a couple years ago, because he was a nasty guy. Apparently. I don't I'm not saying I'm not saying that she that that's what was happening with her but she was shit canned, and replaced. And so I and also this movie was conceived by her the idea was conceived by her merit is based on her daughter. And apparently they're gonna
Misha 28:47
be fuckers cut their dicks off. Look,
Tyler 28:51
cut their dicks off. Cut them off. And Mark Andrews I think his name is the director playster Hasn't
Misha 29:00
directly that's the only feature length film he's directed.
Tyler 29:04
I don't think he's not the one to blame here. Because I laugh at her. Yeah, like the dude was like brought in to replace a woman who created this movie. He's He's part of the problem, I guess. But he's I don't think because he also said something like I I tried to use what she made and like work with it like but he kind of sounded like there were things that were that the Pixar wanted to be replaced and then he like had to do that. But I might be like putting words in his mouth and I don't want to don't want to do that. But yeah, it's like kind of snip snip. I don't want to like snip snip. I don't want to like I don't want to be too shitty, but it just seemed like that maybe was part of why this movie didn't really work.
Misha 29:47
Maybe. Yeah, you know what they say? Start with one director finished with another good great movie. Yeah.
Tyler 29:56
So yeah, I so I but also this
Misha 30:00
was another movie where she just needed to talk to her dad. when there wasn't a bear around just have a calm conversation, explaining what happened. Yeah, and he could have helped.
Tyler 30:15
Well, yeah, I don't know because he's have talked to each other. He's got it done. Yeah, he's that is kind of those
Misha 30:21
three angle boys. Snip snip no more. That's enough.
Tyler 30:25
So what do you think for a score for story? And then I kind of think we should address that because we brought it up and we covered a lot of whatever we wanted to talk about. Let's let's cover like strong female lead, like with this. So what do you think for like a story score? I think like, it's a it's a kind of a bland mess, to be honest.
Misha 30:44
Yeah, I do to a four. I just four. I think that's generous.
Tyler 30:53
I think. What's that? I think four is high.
Misha 30:58
Oh, good. Okay, I thought I was being No, I
Tyler 31:01
think it's too generous. Okay,
Misha 31:04
I agree. Let's go down to three. Yeah, like thing is to compare like, worse, worse than Big Hero Six, but oh, yeah, for sure. Lantis thoroughly appointed part so we have to tie it with Atlantis is what I would say.
Tyler 31:17
I think tying with Atlantis and buting the beast is fine. buting the beast mainly we we did that because of like the the thing that the plot hinges on which is kidnapping.
Misha 31:27
So yeah, okay, right. Okay. That's fine. Yeah. Okay, let's give it a three.
Tyler 31:32
I think three is fine. Yeah. And it's not as bad as gold. So. Yeah. So strong female lead. I think she is really like we have to give
Misha 31:42
I think she's strong. I think she's a strong female lead. She's
Tyler 31:45
not the problem. Right. Are we gonna say she stands up to both her parents and I mean,
Misha 31:53
she stands up for both parents. She stands up to bears. She stands up to all of the clans men. She's like, Yeah, like her. I wish the story and the pacing was better because she would have been a better character. But again, that's not her fault. I like her. Yeah, yeah, I think she's great.
Tyler 32:12
I think she's really great.
Misha 32:14
I really high score.
Tyler 32:16
Yeah, I respect her free soloing that rock rocky wet, Chelsea like uncovered liquid. I respect her. Her Hawk is shooting abilities. I don't respect her like well, I don't know how you let's I want to get your opinion about this. I don't really like how I'm going back to what I was trying to say like kind of clumsily before like the tomboy thing. I like how she's really confident and really sure of herself. But I don't like how she shows like masculine. Like she shows some of the negative traits of like masculine behavior like like the emasculating those suitors and like showing off and I don't I'm
Misha 32:55
fine with a massive fine with that. Yes, yeah. Oh, 100%
Tyler 32:59
I guess I forget where I read it. And if I can find it before, like I edit it and put it out. I'll put it in the episode description, but I've read so I think it was a Time Magazine review, though. And the ladies I felt I'll find the name but she's
Misha 33:13
like, What is strong female, it shouldn't be male like to stereotypically male qualities, but at the same time I don't know. Like I've also heard recently, you know, in that it's 2021 that tomboy isn't an okay term to use.
Tyler 33:37
That's why I was wondering Yeah, I wasn't sure if that Yeah, but
Misha 33:39
that's how sort of identified when I was growing up because it wasn't like post 2020 where we've all learned a lot Yeah, so yeah, I think you know, I think she's a strong female lead and we should give her a pretty high score. I mean, we've Alice a fucking eight. Which she's Belle and I think Maratha is stronger than both of them for sure. At least Alice stronger than Alice.
Tyler 34:11
Yeah it's really fucking high nine is high but I do think she's stronger than those two She's stronger than those two and that just means that like later down the line we're gonna have to make some decision because I think that there are stronger female leads than married now
Misha 34:26
I'm thinking Alice should not be an eight
Tyler 34:29
The reason we put that so yeah the with with Alice it was because I should bail. Yeah, I I recall having some issues with with those but we eventually went with with with Alice I came around to we were eventually like, She's a kid who's like, No, I'm done with this and walks off like she's in. She has agency and knows what she wants. Originally, we were both like down on her because she doesn't like silliness. Oh, no, no,
Misha 34:57
no, no, no, we both were not down on her. Yeah, you
Tyler 35:00
Pilar you You did say you did I recall you're saying something like, you don't like how she goes like Oh, boohoo Okay,
Misha 35:08
okay, audience I just want you all to know Tyler just wagged his fucking finger at me when he said that I do not appreciate the waggle of his finger. Okay.
Tyler 35:21
All right. Yeah, so that's why she ate up but honestly even though beating the beast was was more recent, I don't recall why she got so high. Because I
Misha 35:31
I don't see why not her fault. Okay, because she was a victim. It's not her fault. She's is she did. Yeah. And she did want something. You're She's a victim. Yes. Yeah.
Tyler 35:39
She wanted to get out of that town. She was very educated. And yeah,
Misha 35:42
I agree with America a nine.
Tyler 35:44
I think ninth grade because there's some ladies coming that I would like to give
Misha 35:48
her mom is fucking a leader. She's a fucking queen. Yeah, her mom walks into a room and fucking dominates it. And we've also said if you're a leader of a place or people that counts in our score, so we're giving it a nine because clearly the men are dumb dicks and the women are in the lead. Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
Tyler 36:09
Like we gave A Bug's Life got a four because of the Queen and because of Princess and princess doll. So yeah. All right. Okay, awesome. Animation back. Yes. Jump back to animation.
Misha 36:19
This was clunky. It's like
Tyler 36:23
really? Okay. In what way?
Misha 36:25
I feel like okay, I feel like they rushed. A lot of things, and then they'd slow down, zoom in, and then put a lot of effort and energy into specific things they wanted you to look at, but I felt like
Tyler 36:39
that's a pretty typical tactic, though. Yeah, but
Misha 36:42
that's bullshit. Because I'm noticing how ugly it is. The bears were ugly. Some of the scenery was like really unrefined.
Tyler 36:52
Well, the bears Weren't they walked the ugly baby bears were a choice to make them cartoonish looking like a big kid that he heard of animation, but I wouldn't say that that's ugly. Okay, but look ugly. I agree.
Misha 37:07
That then we need to give a Christmas carol a higher score.
Tyler 37:10
No, I'm just saying that like, it's because those were all choices. Yeah, but you were saying it was like a sloppy moving on. And it wasn't it was it was a bad choice.
Misha 37:19
It was sloppy. No, that's well, okay, fine. That's a bad choice. It's not sloppiness. Bad choice. Okay, you write sloppy and bad choices. I think that there were some parts that were very beautiful and really good. And because of the contrast between the rushed clunky parts that were unrefined and the way they walked. I thought that was bad. It looked like a Dreamworks movie sometimes. And then people. I was kind of disappointed. Yeah,
Tyler 37:50
I don't. I don't I don't agree with the rushed part. But I do agree that things look some things look bad. The baby brother bears looked really gross. And like, cartoonish for a movie that was going for more like realistic looking people kind of all the fucking Scotsman like the Dingle or whatever, his name is wrong. They were disgusting looking.
Misha 38:15
Like, why would they do this thing where it's like, oh, we're gonna make people very distinctive. This person is skinny. This person is a triangle. This person is a big beefy boy, which,
Tyler 38:28
you know, in this person's face is melting into his neck. Yeah. And like the
Misha 38:33
Yeah, just like, Okay, this is what I want to say. Go into a city and just look at a group of people. We're not no, we're not all that different. Like, I don't know, it just seems like they're like, how are kids going to differentiate? Maybe if they're not fucking weird, but kids are smart and they're not I don't know maybe they're not whatever.
Tyler 39:01
I don't I don't quite know if that's like if that's a purpose going into it or if it's just to make it look distinctive. I'm not quite sure but I see what you mean about like the faces and stuff looking kind of the body's looking like
Misha 39:15
I was watching Shrek Yeah, band. Sar has done better right this I was actually surprised it was a Pixar movie when it started. When we really I thought it was just a Disney animated and Pixar didn't have anything do that because Pixar is supposed to be the like, preeminent CGI animators.
Tyler 39:36
And it Everything about it was very Disney ish. Like the the princess. The fantasy stuff. It wasn't very Pixar II too. So maybe that's another reason why. However, I think for the most part, the movie is beautiful. I think the I really liked most of the animations. I was disappointed. I think the nature the landscapes are gorgeous everything like No, all of that is beautiful. I think if you like
Misha 40:03
our if you need glasses and you watch it without your glasses on or without context sure is beautiful, but I feel like they just kind of they blew it. I don't know. I think it was really unrefined and quick.
Tyler 40:18
I don't agree. I don't agree. I agree with some like the human rights. But
Misha 40:24
here's an example. They have the waterfall where she goes and drinks from the fire waterfall from when they're not zoomed in on the waterfall. It's just like, not that great. And then they slow down. She drinks from it. You see it up close, and it's like, it's perfect. But then they have like, all rushed scenery. That's how I felt the mountain the snowy mountains were really cool. But then some of the like when you're first introduced to where their village town city, wherever it is, it just felt it looked like like a video game where you would build a little thought you chop down trees and build a farm in this like that's what it looked like just like a clunky video game. You disagree?
Tyler 41:09
I disagree. I mean, but I've also just seen some video games that blew me away with how beautiful they were so I don't
Misha 41:16
know. Yeah, but I haven't watched video games in a long time watched.
Tyler 41:24
Well, actually, you know what, I shouldn't be laughing because that like Twitch is a thing that people do like watch. Twitch. Yeah,
Misha 41:30
what Twitch is except that AOC is on it. It's
Tyler 41:34
like, like, well, at least a lot of it is people playing video games and other people watching it. But I'm okay. I'm willing to compromise there. Just a couple of things I'd like to mention though if yes, one please. I liked the maybe I need to rewatch it to see maybe you just caught Eagle Eye stuff that I missed but I liked like the foggy Highlands like the
Misha 41:55
saying an eagle eyed cherry song. And I don't know a single word
Tyler 42:04
Eagle Eye cherry. Fuck I
Misha 42:06
tonight. Yeah, that's it.
Tyler 42:09
That's it kind of break. Come tomorrow. Tomorrow I'll be gone safe. And yeah, the vistas of the highlands were beautiful. When when the mom bear and Merida find their way to more dues. Destroyed kingdom and it turns like grayscale. I thought that was really cool.
Misha 42:26
I thought that was beautiful, too. Yeah. So it's like it felt really mixed to me. That's all Yeah,
Tyler 42:31
and there the also with animation. The bears were bears were awesome. Like
Misha 42:35
when Mom is wet. Yeah. Okay, that sounds gross. But when a mom is super wet, she's like, so I was wet.
Tyler 42:42
He's a fuckable. Bear now.
Misha 42:47
Okay, okay. All right. You
Tyler 42:48
can judge Miss Miss wonderfox The Beast
Misha 42:51
bills. She's,
Tyler 42:52
she's a bill. They, I mean, but her animation looks really cool. mordioux looks really cool. And he is like,
Misha 43:01
I'm just saying there was a couple parts that seemed like, right, but you seem
Tyler 43:05
like really down in the whole thing. And I think most of it is nice. Most of
Misha 43:10
it is really good. But I just I don't like the way they walk. I don't like their faces. The people I
Tyler 43:18
agree with that. I don't like like a lot of these like Pixar people and a lot of Disney people. I don't like how they look.
Misha 43:24
We're just gonna have to deal with like, that's sort of the style of CGI animation animation.
Tyler 43:31
Like, yeah, exactly. I grew that like movies that are coming up like Incredibles and stuff like that. I also don't really like how a lot of people look at those types of movies either, but we'll get to it. One other thing I wanted to mention about animation, because I think it's just really cool when I looked into it is like the hair animation. Meritus hair is awesome. It's
Misha 43:51
really cool. Yes, it is. And they like to see that too. It's a really cool it's like its own thing. Yeah, it's like I really liked that too.
Tyler 44:02
I really developed like they there are some great YouTube videos about like each Pixar movie they sort of like change the game again and again and animators out there who are maybe listening to way more than I do and we do for sure but one cool thing I noticed where I learned about was like with with this movie, they created new cool animation to like get different hairstyles so like this would Meritus hair they developed something that they use and then later they implemented for other hair like in for example soul like other you know different types of people and different types of hair when we get to Seoul and her hair had a different gravity coefficient. It was closer to like the moon's gravity than like Earth gravity so that's why it's so like, like very noticeably like bouncy and like rich and like kind of like it's very cool. really vibrant. Yeah.
Misha 44:53
All right. All right. I want to I do want to give it a good score because i There were parts that were just incredible. Like just Beautiful, but there was a couple of things I had a problem with but other you know, jet problems.
Tyler 45:03
Yeah, and it back to kind of story not going all the way like jumping back in time. But like the one problem you had with the story was these clan dudes are around too much. And that really brings the movie down because they're like really all quite ugly. So there's just too much of them running around the castle. And like,
Misha 45:22
not they don't some of them almost don't look human. Yeah, we do like animated them.
Tyler 45:28
Dude with the kid like, like, no. Yeah, it was awful. Anyway. So all right. What do we think for animation? I think like, I mean, I would give this high but like taking into consideration the problems you had with it. Like, what do you think about like a seven?
Misha 45:46
Yeah, I'll give it a seven. That's what I was thinking. Cuz,
Tyler 45:50
like some of it, I think is like eight worthy, but, but I don't think that thing right.
Misha 45:55
I think some of it is even nine worthy, but there are problems that I had with it. And it was like, that's kind of Yeah, yeah. I want to deduct some points for that. Okay,
Tyler 46:05
cool. All right. Well, music and sound the wisps? The whisk. Oh, the wisps? Yeah, the little glass
Misha 46:11
it thinks you know, that's not It's not their fault that they looked like. Yes, Carol.
Tyler 46:16
So Christmas carol came out after that. No Christmas carol came out in 2009. So
Misha 46:22
it is Braves fault. Okay, so yeah, they lose. Well,
Tyler 46:26
we can't we can't assume that they watched that.
Misha 46:31
The same? You don't think Disney everybody at Disney watches their own movies?
Tyler 46:37
Well, this is Pixar. And if you're working at Pixar, yes, you're sort of under the Overlord if you unless you had a gun to your head would you watch Christmas Carol? Like like like we could we get a lot of hate mail but like what were you guys thinking? So now? But like yeah, like why would they have watched that movie? It was a different studio under Disney have gotten
Misha 46:58
messages and notes of thanks for from people for not for the warning that they should not watch A Christmas Carol. Yeah. All right. Music and sound. I
Tyler 47:13
liked the score quite a bit actually. I thought it was good. It it wasn't like the thing with music is here. What we we find ourselves doing is like, if it doesn't really stand out to pardon the Goofy Movie on it's, it's sort of kind of unfortunately becomes like, solid but forgettable for us. But I just wanted to mention that this movie, it's not like, like amazing score, but it is like good and solid. And I just wanted to shout out this. Like because I feel like we're down on scores a lot. But this one I liked it. It was scary. It was the it was
Misha 47:48
like the score the three there were three songs I hated those did oh, okay, we're on the same page. The score was beautiful. Yeah, yes, but it felt like all these movies where they're like wedging in, like contemporary songs, and they don't fucking fit.
Tyler 48:10
It didn't work for both either. Like we talked about I
Misha 48:13
was gonna say it felt the set. Yep, it felt the same spot but the rest of it was beautiful. And the sound effects are great. And I would give it a little bit better than bolt because the rest of the score was good. But the songs also just they sucked like yeah,
Tyler 48:30
I liked the score. I thought the score was even like a tad better than Big Hero Six but I'm willing to give it a six if because yeah, let's bring it down because
Misha 48:39
those three songs were like Big Hero Six
Tyler 48:42
so I didn't but I did and I think we pushed it up because I talked you into it a little bit so let's just tie it with big heroes because I think it's better than Big Hero Six but those like those songs that are in it or bring it down they bring it down yeah all right. So type six Yeah, and I was really I appreciated the fact that there wasn't not to be like rude or anything but like I do have like an upper threshold to how much bagpipe I can take and this movie like didn't hit that it didn't like go too hard with the like Scottish Gaelic sounds it did it but just just a good amount to make it like evocative and
Misha 49:21
had a very like melodic beautiful. Gaelic Wait, what's the difference between Gallic and Gaelic? Do you remember which is which
Tyler 49:30
Gallic I might be just like another pronunciation but but Oh, Alec is also is Gallic is also like maybe from like the Gauls like the French. Is it GALG A ll I see
Misha 49:44
someone who knows this tell me the difference.
Tyler 49:49
So Galic I believe I could be wrong but Gallic if it's GA LIC is about the goals from France. Yes,
Misha 49:56
it is okay.
Tyler 49:57
But there was also the you've now that you bring this up God's and scots gaelic are not the same language. Scots is Germanic and scots gaelic is daily.
Misha 50:07
Okay. How cool would it have been if they just had a one of those languages song? Yeah. And I think be so much better than like whatever crap they put in.
Tyler 50:21
There was there was a, like the mom sings a song in Gaelic, I think, doesn't she the lullaby to murder
Misha 50:32
I watched this half an hour I finished watching this half an hour before we started recording and they don't remember that
Tyler 50:39
yeah, also there's a song the song of more do as it's called. I just had to look this up really quick the drinking song that that the king and those dudes sang. That song is sung and Scots, but it's not sung in Scots in the movie, but I think it is on the soundtrack. Got Scots, the Germanic language, not Scottish Gaelic, and then the mom sings a Gaelic of Scottish Scottish Gaelic song. Yeah. Okay, the lullaby when Maratha is they do a flashback to America as a child. And when she first hears the the tale of Mordor, or that they didn't know is mortal at the time at the tail of that shitty King. That was like bad, right? That's when they Yeah, so there are two instances but they could have they could have us a little bit more rather than the the fucking Mumford and Sons thing at the end. And yeah, yes, one of the monsters or one of the sons of Mumford whatever they're called.
Misha 51:32
Wait now Mumford and Sons. Is it a Mumford and Sons?
Tyler 51:36
I think it's one of those those band names that it like Hootie and the Blowfish. There's no person actually named hoody in the band or blowfish blowfish they're all blowfish. Well, that's a Darius Rucker always got really mad like I'm not a fucking hoodies don't quote me hoodie, then don't think you're
Misha 51:51
a foodie and the Hootie and the Blowfish. Yeah,
Tyler 51:55
I don't know that much about Mumford and Sons. But I think like there aren't Oh, no, I'm wrong. I just looked it up. And there's a guy named it has Mumford. And what it's Marcus Mumford and then two other dudes. Are they his sons?
Misha 52:07
Yes.
Tyler 52:08
They all have the same age to
Misha 52:10
meet. No, he had them at the ripe old age of I don't want to talk about it and feeling grossed out by what I was just gonna say.
Tyler 52:22
So, so Okay, moving on. protagonist, I think like, I mean, I don't know if it should be. She is a strong female lead, but like because of the story her score comes down.
Misha 52:36
Yeah, yeah, she fell flat.
Tyler 52:39
So I was like, I think kind of like bolt like bolt is a lovable like great protagonist but the story brought him down to a seven I think something similar for for America to be honest.
Misha 52:53
I've liked both better, like
Tyler 52:55
both better. Okay, I mean bolt is really lovable he's
Misha 52:59
not just do I not remember who said
Tyler 53:04
no, no, we like to be liked both in in the story he's he doesn't get like a super high score because like in the story, the story is shit so so I
Misha 53:14
do like the actress or the actor who played did the voice for America. Kelly MacDonald Donald Yeah, she like is a lot of thing she's really good but I just
Tyler 53:25
you know she replaced somebody you know who the first had this fucking movie? Yeah Who the first pick was
Misha 53:31
Nicolas Cage off the reason he's on my mind is because part of the plot is that the which goes to Wicker Man to burn Nicolas
Tyler 53:39
Cage. Oh, okay. I didn't think about that. Go to The Wicker Man
Misha 53:43
Festival. I forgot to bring that up too. Which is like Sorry, I can't help you. I'm off to Wicker Man Festival to put Nicolas Cage in a bear suit Birdman a worker man wicker basket boom.
Tyler 53:56
Speaking of the witch this I guess I'm bringing this up because I guess it kind of falls under animation but when she is pushing Mary to out of our cottage with all the knives and stuff. Oh, yeah. And then and then knives the turn on her. Yeah. When Americans like oh, by everything they turn on her that was really
Misha 54:13
fun. Like, oh, wait. Yeah, did very, very funny. We needed more witchy see
Tyler 54:17
and more. And did you see the end credit scene where all the stuff that Meredith bought shows up at the castle? Yeah, yeah, I didn't notice that the first time I watched it, but I noticed that this time is kind of funny. Yeah.
Misha 54:29
Yeah, Carver not the witch.
Tyler 54:32
So Kelly MacDonald replaced Reese Witherspoon who was going to be Maratha but she she apparently pulled out because she couldn't she she pulled out because she Jackson couldn't master the Scottish accent. Yeah.
Misha 54:45
Yeah. Um, not everybody can is
Tyler 54:48
weird. Yeah, it's weird how they didn't call you Misha. Yeah, to give some I
Misha 54:52
should have just done it because let me tell you this bipoc score would have been a little bit higher. It would
Tyler 54:57
have been a tad bit a tad higher. Yeah, just yeah. Got a bit higher. Go higher. Yeah, because right now, but we'll get through it. So, I mean, I don't know I gotta stick up. I think merit is great. I just think she's, she's just suffering from a bad story. Sure. I want to give her a seven. That's kind of what I'm thinking. I'm thinking similar to bolt.
Misha 55:22
Sure. All right. I'll give her a seven.
Tyler 55:24
She's fine. So let's so for example, ride a horse. She Yeah, well, okay tree. All right. So she Max Max and Aladdin got sixes. I think she's I think she's like a stronger protector than Aladdin. I think she's a stronger protagonist and Aladdin. Yeah. The problem is like Aladdin. Is just Aladdin is like more iconic but, but that's because of just Disney and the way that
Misha 55:49
that is the one who is iconic in that movie.
Tyler 55:54
That's fair. Yeah, I guess genies more iconic. Yeah. And Jasmine to
Misha 56:00
Jasmine. Yeah. All right. Yeah. Seven. All right. Give her a seven. All right. Sidekick. Sidekick. Sidekick. Is her mother the sidekick?
Tyler 56:09
I think the closest is the sidekick. I think Angus doesn't really count because he's not in enough. Yeah, he's barely in it. I like when
Misha 56:18
we get to the meat of the plot. Done. It's, it's too quick. We spend so much time at the beginning, not in the plot that we don't have time to figure out and yeah,
Tyler 56:31
yeah, I would say probably the mom is the sidekick. I guess technically. I'm the mom bear. The Mama's bear is the sidekick.
Misha 56:39
The Mamas bear is fucking awesome. If we're saying right now. She is the sidekick. She's the best character in the home.
Tyler 56:47
I think she's great. I like what she's like trying to eat the nightshade berries, but they're like, everything's great. Yeah. When
Misha 56:53
she is okay. So when she first puts on the crown, and then looks down. And it's like, all upset. She goes, Oh, yeah, she's she's great. The way she moves when she transitions from like, inside being mom to the inside being there like those really? Well done. I think she's a great sidekick.
Tyler 57:16
I think she's a great sidekick.
Misha 57:17
I think she is the best part of the movie. Yeah. Aside
Tyler 57:22
from like, for me, the best part is like the animation on Meritus hair. I just I can't get over how cool it is like, but here's the best. I just think it's cool. Yeah. But I agree that she's she's super cool. I wanted more of that funny like weird, buddy. Comedy mom and mom bear daughter. human relationship. Yeah. So now I have
Misha 57:44
a question. Yeah. So when Maratha is giving her speech inside the castle, and the mom is like, sneaking. Yeah, the dad is facing the same. And a whole bunch of Klansmen are facing the same way. Yeah. As Nerida so they can all see this bear. Creeping Pat, right. Yep. Yeah. It's. Yeah, it's like big.
Tyler 58:13
It's pretty. It's a pretty big flip. Whoo. I'll be honest. Yeah. It's not like somebody cast pass without trace honor. So yeah, she just it reminded me, it reminded me of that part and Emperor's New Groove when Kronk is his name when he's like sneaking around, but we'll get to that later. So what should we give? What should we give her? Because Okay, so here's the thing. You really liked her and I liked her too. Maybe not as much as you do. But I do like her. It's
Misha 58:41
a lot. A classic sidekick.
Tyler 58:43
She's not in it a lot. Yeah. And like for example, we took some points off of the the Red Queen for not being in it enough to be like as good of a villain score wise as like, six then. Oh, but never mind. In the end, we, we,
Misha 59:00
I would give her I would give her a higher score than Maratha. Because if we're actually saying, okay, so we just
Tyler 59:05
have here but she's not but here's the thing like sidekick, she's the sidekick, but like she's, but here's like she's enjoying
Misha 59:13
the marathon and the marathon needs to lose a point.
Tyler 59:17
Why would marry to lose a point because the mom's not in it enough story because the writers of the story well, we did like Meredith got a nine strong female lead score. We bumped her down to a seven because because the story doesn't do like what it should when I would give the mom and the mom isn't given her do either. So story wise,
Misha 59:36
she's a mom of seven or eight because she's awesome.
Tyler 59:41
Yeah, so what I was going to say is, Is she as good as like the side kicks and Beauty and the Beast and the side kicks and A Bug's Life.
Misha 59:47
Ya know, so yes, she's better. Yes, I shouldn't say she's so
Tyler 59:53
Bambi side kicks got a seven A Bug's Life side kicks got a seven shooting the bees got an he loses is the point I would want to punish her for not being in it enough? Because
Misha 1:00:04
I want to give her an eight. She's awesome.
Tyler 1:00:07
Okay, I'm fine with an eight. We just need to remember that like for example, we didn't give the Red Queen as much as we maybe could have because the reason for like, but the queen is in and a lot more. Yeah the Queen if we if we just say the Queen instead of bear queen, then she's in it for the whole damn thing.
Misha 1:00:25
That's what I'm saying bear queen is the is the sidekick bear queen is the sidekick and the queen in general. We can't
Tyler 1:00:32
if we say out of it. Well, that's what I'm saying. If we say the queen in general, she's in the whole movie. So my criticism of her not being in it that much. is wrong. Yeah. I'm just going against what I said earlier. Okay, so I'm fine with an eight. Yeah, cuz yeah, if we think of her as I was, I was just really strictly thinking of just when she's a bear. So if we think of the Queen, the mom is the sidekick. I would say eight is, is good. Yeah, it's strong. Yeah.
Misha 1:00:55
I love when she's like walking upright, as when she's the queen. She walks upright. And when she's there, she's down on all fours. And when I was watching, it reminded me when I worked at the Bronx Zoo, I don't know if she's still alive, monster animals in captivity or live horrible lives usually. But and zoo shouldn't exist. But they had this gorilla, this lady gorilla who would walk upright, which was very weird to see. Because normally they don't, but she would like, walk upright with her elbows. That's what I thought of watching a mom Queen bear.
Tyler 1:01:32
Yeah, she did this thing like with her with her big claws to do that.
Misha 1:01:38
She'd always like, do something and then look at herself. Like Wait, I'm a bear. I liked her. I thought she was the best. All right. Eight. It's the story that
Tyler 1:01:48
Fuck yeah. And
Misha 1:01:50
We deducted a lot of points already from Yes, that's fine. Yeah.
Tyler 1:01:53
Speaking of bears, and paws, there's a good and joke that the one of my favorite jokes is one that Dan told me. A bear walks in a bar and says, I'll have a gin and tonic. And the bartender says sure, coming right up. But what's the big pause? I'm a buyer. That's one of my favorite jokes. You don't need to put that in the podcast. But that's like, that is like an Toby that joke. And it's like
Misha 1:02:20
when I say we're working, we're keeping it
Tyler 1:02:23
Okay, villain. There's the villain in the movie. There's the villain is supposed to be more do but it's like, he's not he but the victim.
Misha 1:02:31
He's a fucking victim of a curse. He's the victim of a curse of the witch. And, you know, monkey's paw scenario? Is
Tyler 1:02:39
the which is the witch the bad guy? Because if she is she accidentally cursing these people? Or is this like a purposeful, whimsical, chaotic, neutral type thing?
Misha 1:02:49
The Magic World does things that no one can control. You can control
Tyler 1:02:55
the land of the Fae.
Misha 1:02:58
So she's she is just what do you call it? Where you're like a you passes through you? Like she's a vessel. She's a vessel of magic, right?
Tyler 1:03:11
You can say like, colon, right? Like food, like things pass through and then you okay, you're
Misha 1:03:20
okay. So magic is food. She swallows it eats it. And then she's the colon or the intestines and then the result is poop. The witch is just a woodcarver, she's Yeah. And the thing is, like she can conjure the magic that exists in the world. So she's not a villain.
Tyler 1:03:39
Yeah. And more do is like, he's not a villain. Because like, he's only like, in the simplest view, he's a villain because he like shows up a couple times and is scary and people like want to kill him.
Misha 1:03:52
I would actually say if he's a villain, and the mom is also a villain, because she also turns into a bear and could have had the same Yeah, fate as this as more do so no, but I
Tyler 1:04:05
think no villain, but I think the difference is like, we're supposed to believe that again, like we're supposed to believe, but maybe we don't. But the mom would have eventually Gone Wild and but maybe wouldn't have been like bloodthirsty wild bears.
Tyler 1:04:22
No, there's nothing wrong with wild bears. But like, but more do wild bears. Who was like catching fish and enjoying Yeah, but I'm not. That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying but more do is deferrals.
Misha 1:04:32
Anyway, I hear what you're saying. They were trying to make more do the villain but yeah,
Tyler 1:04:38
and we and we and we didn't think always. Yeah, yeah, that sucks.
Misha 1:04:43
What a one, two.
Tyler 1:04:45
Yeah, I don't think there's really a bad guy.
Misha 1:04:49
Oh, 101 Yeah, yeah.
Tyler 1:04:52
henchmen. There's no fucking answer unless you want to count like the Klansmen as the henchmen. But that doesn't that's not what a henchman is. So it makes sense. So I'm female lead, we already did bipoc representation slash portrayal.
Misha 1:05:05
I will say I'm gonna give it a one. It is a has a historical. I don't know, Scottish based movie, Scotland based movie, we're probably everybody was white. So you know, like, Okay, we can't just like, if it's supposed to sort of be semi historical fine. But what's bullshit is you can have all white actors playing brown people and not a single brown actor playing White people also are there no. Okay, the all the cast were predominantly are they're all British, either English or Scottish. And not a single one of them. Were not white. So a big old one. Yeah. Yeah. There's plenty of Scottish and are British, non white actors. So, yeah.
Tyler 1:05:59
Yeah. Agreed. Fun Factor. Somewhere in the middle, I guess. Like it's not
Misha 1:06:09
like, I was kind of bored. was a big chunk of it. Because the meat of it is the mom turning into a bear. And yeah, it's like such a small part of it. Yeah, we're leading up to that point. Yeah, I
Tyler 1:06:23
think maybe. It's it's tough. Like, I think Atlantis had more exciting moments. Even though we didn't really like Atlantis.
Misha 1:06:32
Atlantis was more. I think Atlantis was more fun. Yeah,
Tyler 1:06:37
we gave Atlantis a four. Yeah, it was a three Bambi is not very fun. So I don't know the three do you think we should tie it with Bambi? I
Misha 1:06:46
think we should tie it with Bambi because Atlantis is more fun.
Tyler 1:06:51
Yeah. Yeah, a little bit more of a rip roaring times. Yeah. drags a bit not the pacing really heard it? Okay, doesn't sit right. Did you have any like beefs with it? Other than like, we that we already covered about, like female empowerment in the how that's covered and stuff like that. I don't know if this is really like a doesn't sit right thing. But I, I would like to hear from like anybody out there in the audience who if anybody from Scotland is listening, it'd be great to get your opinion. Like, do you think that this is offensive? Because for me, it's like cringy when they portrays people from Scotland, it's always like medieval Scots. Klansmen, like, like acting like burr is it like brutes and like mooning people and if that's I don't know, I just I mean, obviously like medieval Europe was a nasty place but like I just feel like the Scots kind of get a like, kind of get shit on often by like shit on a lot by popular culture. So I don't know. Not as bad as like, say, you know, people of color but obviously but like, I'm wondering about I'm curious what people think because I don't really know. And I've only got like one friend who is Scottish. And I don't think he's seen this movie. So I can't call on his aid. The other thing that I found weird me she was
Misha 1:08:12
like, yeah, go I was gonna say I agree. I just feel like the only Scottish things we see are from a particular time and not and they're just yeah portrayed as like kind of violent idiots. Yeah, or
Tyler 1:08:31
like the likes to go back to like Atlantis like the quote unquote like noble savage which is super problematic but in like a different way not in like a it's often like Native Americans that are portrayed in like that way but like they like Outlander that show. Like I've seen a couple episodes of that. It's like a weird, bad romance but like it's still kind of portraying that time and anyway, another thing sorry that I wanted to so bring up Mitch was maybe you noticed this in your Wikipedia research but Pixar or sorry, Disney registered the tartan of Clan dune bra the like Meritus family they registered that tartan design and they also did that for clan MC duck in 1942. Like they they made an actual thing. They made it you know what a tartan is like the plaid design that signifies your clan. Like each clan has a different like Disney made a new one for clan dunbrack And then registered legally in the registry of tartans in Scotland, for clan McDuck and clan goon Brooke Wait.
Misha 1:09:43
Wait, hold on first. Class first don't bruh okay, this emeritus family this movie gave Yeah. Okay. So you can have a fictionalized tartan be registered Word legally. Yes. If you have enough money I'm assuming I can't just make a flag in tartan apparently Yeah.
Tyler 1:10:10
And the registration was celebrated. So, so according to wiki This is straight from Wikipedia because I have no idea but they show the picture of the the tartan. The registration was registered in the Scottish register of turns upon release of the film. And the pic the colors on the tartan have symbolic things relating to the Scottish Highlands and the North Sea and the clans and the Scottish people all that so like Pixar and Disney like took historical considerations into account but then like, but then yeah, they they registered a fictional family with a real historical thing. Which some people like Scottish Parliament Member Alex Johnstone, apparently I don't know if I'm pronouncing that correctly called shallow and a reverend could be considered as such. Yeah, it's
Misha 1:11:01
a weird thing to do. Now,
Tyler 1:11:03
I'm wondering if this is offensive, though for Yeah, so clan McDuck was it and then in Wikipedia says this was not the first thing they did it they did for clan McDuck in 1942. So yeah, clan, McDuck. Scrooge McDuck and his family. Wait, Scrooge McDuck.
Misha 1:11:19
Duck. Yeah. All of DuckTales
Tyler 1:11:25
Yeah. He's from a Scottish clan
Misha 1:11:27
registered Scottish tartan. Yep. All right. All right.
Tyler 1:11:33
That's a 1948 story. The so yeah, Jake Matilda Downey Fergus Hortons Scrooge and Angus. Apparently, and quickly is another one. Malcolm McDuck.
Misha 1:11:54
Yeah, are they all MC ducks?
Tyler 1:11:56
There's another one called actually MC duck stuffed MC duck roast McDuck swamp whole MC duck Donald.
Misha 1:12:02
Stop swamp swamp Hall swamp hole Mikdash. Ron
Tyler 1:12:07
Paul McDonough.
Misha 1:12:08
Tyler, can you get a tattoo that says swamp hole McDuck with that? So it'll be like bubble lit like black letters, but with their league registered tartan please.
Tyler 1:12:19
Oh, it's funny that you mentioned that because I already do I bleed to our audience. My left buttcheeks has swamp hole and on the right is a Scottish like Scrooge McDuck, pointing to by asshole.
Tyler 1:12:35
It's like a Rebus but a swamp. Right this
Misha 1:12:43
duck. Incredible.
Tyler 1:12:48
Yeah, I wonder if that's a fence. So of course, apparently like someone in Parliament. That was offensive. But then I see these make duck
Misha 1:12:55
offensive.
Tyler 1:12:56
So like,
Misha 1:12:57
I have news for you. Yeah, excuse me. It's serce Walpole.
Tyler 1:13:02
Oh, he's uh, sorry. You got knighted? Okay. Wonderful. Is it? Uh,
Misha 1:13:06
oh, yeah.
Tyler 1:13:09
Swanpool is a is traditionally male.
Misha 1:13:11
You have to update your tattoo. You have to update your tattoo to Sir swappable.
Tyler 1:13:17
I can do that. I can do that. It'll Yeah, it'll be painful. Easy. That's
Misha 1:13:21
an easy fix. Yeah, I
Tyler 1:13:23
wonder if it's, I was gonna say I wonder if it's offensive because I often see like advertisements on YouTube for like, buy a little plot of Scottish land and you're now a lord or Lady of Scotland. So I feel like there's a lot of like, selling of heritage from the British Isles. That is, like kind of questionable. But anyway, anyway,
Misha 1:13:43
read to you about I want to read to you about sir swamp hole McDuck. Okay, all right, go for is a live 1190 to 1260 So okay, born 1190 died 1267 years old that's not bad, succeeded his father roast MC duck as Clan Chief and inherited his financial problems. In 1220 Swamp hole seal the dungeon of Castle MC duck which he claimed was an attempt to decrease maintenance costs. He did however, create secret passageways in the castle leading to the dungeons. These passageways would later be useful during subsequent sieges. After his death and 1260 Swamp hole was not buried in the clan cemetery. Rather, his skeleton was placed inside his memorial suit of armor, which was placed in Castle McDuck swap hold. McDuck is first mentioned in the old castle secret by Karl banks. The old castles secret HOLY SHIT published
Tyler 1:14:42
in 1947 as other secret
Misha 1:14:47
the old castles other secret or a letter from 2004 by Don Rosa is revealed that the swamp hole sealed the dungeons that swamp hold sealed Hundreds not to reduce mass but to conceal a treasure. Don't
Tyler 1:15:05
don't plug your don't don't plug up your sample for decreasing cost reasons. Plug it up if you want to, like don't have other people tell you what to do with your small
Misha 1:15:13
pool treasure. buried treasure in your swamp old passages. Yeah,
Tyler 1:15:18
man. This may be the most ridiculous tangent of the mall. Okay, speaking of swamp halls, speaking of swamp halls, doesn't sit right. Let's get back on track.
Misha 1:15:33
Oh, yeah. Okay.
Tyler 1:15:38
Nothing really didn't sit right to me.
Misha 1:15:41
Yeah, zero, right. That was fine. effervescence. All right. effervescence,
Tyler 1:15:47
I think maybe like a little bit like MERIT has merit is like kind of iconic in our in our way. And like there's like some special
Misha 1:15:56
stuff to us. Yeah. They were seen to fire waterfall when she goes to the more loose cannon grayscale. Like that was really I don't know, parts. The some of those parts felt kind of magical. Yeah, yeah. The I think it should get a couple bonus points. Martyrs fortress part yet? Yeah. Sure. Like, three to three points to Yeah,
Tyler 1:16:23
let's go. Let's go to No, I'm fine with three. Okay. I'm fine with three. I mean, I said I said two but you? I'm fine, too. Okay. Sure. Okay, so All right. The total. Okay,
Misha 1:16:41
the total score for Brave is 54. Okay, so, one point better than Big Hero Six, and not as good as all the others that are in the 60s.
Tyler 1:16:56
Okay, and coming up next. If you didn't have enough bears in your life coming up next is Brother Bear. Bear jokes are bear jokes. And I don't know anything about Brother Bear. To be honest. Neither do I. I'm just glad it's not I don't know anything. I'm just glad I stopped cars. Yeah, brother.
Misha 1:17:18
I'm guessing at least one of them will be a brother. We're gonna have to do but then. Yeah, it's cars. I'm assuming there's going to be at least one bear and at least one brother who may be the same. You'd
Tyler 1:17:31
think so but then there's Hootie and the Blowfish. And there's no blowfish and no hoodie. No sons and mom bird. So you know, sometimes we're disappointed by things so, but we'll see. Well, because coming up soon is the
Misha 1:17:47
familiar brother. It could be of a monk, brother a priest, brother. Okay.
Tyler 1:17:56
Yeah, maybe brother see. Oh, hey, brother. All right.
Misha 1:18:00
