Don't send it to the podcast email, but just like figure out how to send like, what were those like, cheat curse chainmail?
Tyler 02:03
Oh, yeah. Send
Misha 02:04
that to Thai?
Tyler 02:05
Like send any if you have any of those emails, like if you don't send it to 10 people, your grandmother will contract syphilis then Yeah, send those to me. Those old
Misha 02:15
oh my gosh, the bones of my Grandma What do you send contracting? Like contracting? I thought you were like, Okay, we're writing a contract.
Tyler 02:27
Yeah, just like your your site
Misha 02:32

Tyler 02:38
Although we said you are going to get syphilis you didn't sign it fully. So no syphilis for you. Yeah. Yeah, my my emphasis my phrasing wasn't my intonation wasn't great. Much like your fan email, which turned to do fan email.
Misha 02:54
It's like, it was great. I did that. You know, like that hit movie, Christmas carol in my notes to not forget to write female.
Tyler 03:07
So, gang, we are very excited to talk about this movie. Right off the bat. It is a new movie. So spoilers ahead. We will be spoiling the movie. Yep. So if you haven't seen it, go watch it. Go watch it. Yeah, what's on Disney plus it's on Amazon if it's safe to go to the theater go to the theater of course but because that's the you know, the the experience but in many countries it's not so safe to do that. So exercise caution not here. Not in America. Not really in Turkey either.
Misha 03:38
I mean, unless you've had Omicron recently then you can go to the theater once you're not Oh my crime suppose I suppose. Yeah. I mean, I guess right. I
Tyler 03:48
don't know. And I don't want to give any advice related except
Misha 03:53
nobody knows anything.
Tyler 03:57
So yeah, so we're gonna be spoiling it so yeah, that warning is out there we will be talking about for those that are new Velcome and for those that are old, also welcome. We will be talking about originality story animation, music and sound protagonist sidekick villain henchmen strong female lead bipoc representation slash portrayal and fun factor categories whether or not the movies have them. We'll see. And we have these minus points for doesn't sit right and bonus points for effervescence that special Disney magic, giving it like Spinal Tap it goes to 11 D 110. And not 100 Because we're special like that. So let's get into it. What is this movie about me? Oh,
Misha 04:43
I usually mentally prepare what I'm going to say for this heart didn't do it. But I think I watched it this morning. So and I will say here's a podcast episode spoiler. I liked it. So I'll do my best to give.
Tyler 04:58
I specifically did not mention if I liked it or not because I am I'm still because usually I do you know we usually we vote to like just to peek behind the the DM screen of the podcast we I mean it's not really pick up the screen we do right off the bat we usually say we liked it or little this movie. This one I'm still conflicted about and I think I got to talk through it to BPP I gotta talk through it, I think. But yeah, okay, let's do it.
Misha 05:26
Okay. So this movie is about a girl who lives amongst a magical family in Colombia. And her abuela fled from her hometown to save her with her village. And I guess nobody survived, which is really dark, but
Tyler 05:52
I will who populated the rest of the village that's protected.
Misha 05:56
They're all inbred.
Tyler 05:57
Okay. I thought that those people survived, I think no, I
Misha 06:00
thought they showed up later.
Tyler 06:02
Well, remember throwing jumping ahead a little bit. When the when the magic happens. She turns around and there are people there. So I think like the people there Yeah,
Misha 06:15
like, Oh, you mean at the end? I was right in the flashback at the end. Okay.
Tyler 06:20
Yeah, like the people that were sleeping with her. They survived. I think they helped populate. I mean, she probably went to bone town with a bunch of them because why not? You know, but Well, she
Misha 06:29
didn't get pregnant with anybody else's child except her husband's. And so anyway, I boil it to her. She wasn't a boil at the time, had three kids. She was gifted by the magical universe, this magic candle that gave her children magic powers when they came of age and she had this magic candle that built this magic home Casita, and they're all magical. Here comes Mirabelle, the granddaughter of the founder of this town, is village and at Mira bells coming of age, magic gifting. She's not gifted any magic. Yeah. Abuela is a real meanie about it. And doesn't treat her very nicely and is really hard on her and Maribel feels like an outcast and she's sad. She's deeply sad because she doesn't have any magical powers and all her cousins and her sisters to she who's her sister.
Tyler 07:46
She has two sisters, Louisa and Isabella. Are her sisters, sisters or cousins. No, those are the sisters and then the cousins are Dolores the one with the good hearing. Camilo, the shapeshifter and Antonio, the youngest one.
Misha 07:59
Okay.
Tyler 08:00
The reason I remember that is because I'm looking at a family tree right now.
Misha 08:03
Because it's, you make me sound like an idiot. No, no, you
Tyler 08:07
don't sound like any. I'm just, I'm just trying to be helpful because much like the Columbian novel 100 Years of Solitude. This family is very complicated.
Misha 08:16
Thank you. Okay.
Tyler 08:18
You're welcome. Tyler fuck you. I love you. I love you.
Misha 08:32
So she feels like an outsider and then at Antonio's party to celebrate his magical gifts that he received that night. Mirabelle goes out, leaves the party and goes into the courtyard, and all of a sudden these cracks start forming in the floor and the tiles start falling off the roof and casita is cracking. And she runs in to tell everybody, they come outside, they see nothing. And it wasn't a hallucination because she cut her hand on one of the broken tiles. Yep. Which her mom healed with her magic abilities. And Mirabel no knows that she has to save her family. And if she wasn't hallucinating, so she goes on this journey to figure out what's going on and how she can fix it. And it leads her to Bruno her cousin,
Tyler 09:33
her other uncle,
Misha 09:35
Uncle right to Bruna okay to Bruno. That's right. That's right. He's Wait. Who's he?
Tyler 09:41
He's that one of the trip. He's one of the triplets. He's
Misha 09:44
one of the triplets. Okay, so there. Okay. There's the weather. Yeah, the mom who heels and Bruno and that's it. Okay.
Tyler 09:52
It's T. Who's the weather lady? It's Bruno and then Julio. Yeah, family. Okay. cuz I forgot that I forgot. I forgot the Yeah, with all transparency like I'm not I'm not memorizing a whole complicated family. And Julio says the mom's name. But Peppa is the one that I forgot. So I looked at the tree.
Misha 10:12
So it leads her to Bruno and Bruno's power is seeing the future. And he left the family, which we'll get to later, he left the family. And
Tyler 10:26
they don't talk about it. Nobody talks about him, apparently. Don't
Misha 10:30
talk about Bruno. Yeah. And because he left the family, and they viewed his powers as a bad thing, because he would predict sort of all the not so great things that were happening. And so he left nobody talks about Bruno. But Mirabel is led to his tower, where she finds the shards of glowing green glass. That is his prediction of what the future holds. And that's why he left because of this prediction. And later, well, I'll get to it. So then, she puts the pieces together. And it's
Tyler 11:12
her in her house. Broken house. Yeah, creepy
Misha 11:16
and scary and spooky.
Misha 11:24
And when she goes back home, everybody finds out that she's been doing this and that she is the vision that Bruno had. Yeah, and abuela is not happy.
Tyler 11:39
And we also know and
Misha 11:52
and they are boya and Mirabel. start fighting. Missing apart. I feel like I'm missing a huge chunk of time. Um,
Tyler 12:02
there is a there I mean, there was some song and dancing. Yeah.
Misha 12:05
Oh, I'm not got two full hours. So sorry. What is this a Bollywood movie? Anyway, um, Mirabelle goes and finds Bruno.
Tyler 12:19
Yep, actually beats burnout. Yeah, yeah,
Misha 12:21
hiding in the walls of the house. So he never left the village. He never left home. He was just hiding. And she finds out he did that because he was trying to protect Mirabelle because he knew that his vision was about her. And he was worried that if the family found out that the vision of the cracked house had Mirabel standing in front of it, they would have done whatever, just to her. Yeah. And so she decides to get him to do another vision for her and convinces him that she wants to see the rest of this vision. It can't end with just him being confused and unsure as to what it means. So they go, they he does another spell or whatever. And he sees that there's more to it that there's some hope. And she just needs to hug somebody her sister. Yeah. Ah, what's that one's name?
Tyler 13:24
Isabella. Isabella.
Misha 13:25
Yeah, she needs to hug Isabella. Because they fight. And they hug. They sing. They dance. It's a whole thing. The candle grows stronger. Yeah. Yeah. But then abuela walks in. And she starts yelling at Maribel about what are you doing with Isabella? Because Isabella has to be perfect. That's her thing. Now she looks a mess. There's all these cacti growing everywhere. And she's supposed to just grow flowers because she's perfect. And Mirabel yells at her abuela. And while they're fighting, the house starts to crack and the whole house starts to crumble. The magic goes out because they're fighting. And while they're fighting Mirabel tells the abuela that she's the reason that the magic is dying because she's hard on everybody. No one's happy. Everyone's stressed out because they have to live up to these. They're what's expected of them and not just be true to themselves. And they're bound by their gifts by their magical powers instead of being free to be who they are and be happy because of abuela is pressure on them to as magical and perfect in their own ways as they can be. So the house crumbles the magic goes out and then the whole town is gray and the casita done crumbled ruins
Tyler 14:55
the candle candles out completely out
Misha 14:59
No magic and Maribel runs away and she goes to the river and the spot where her abuela was first gifted this magic and magic candle. And abuela shows up, and they talk to each other and abuela realizes how she has been. And her holding on to this idea is actually ruining the family's love for each other by being held captive by this magic, and being true to that, rather than being true to themselves and each other. And so, they hug and all these butterflies show up and they feel so good and then they go back to the town but the town is still in ruins the La Casita and nobody has their powers. So Mirabelle leads the town and leads the village and leads the family to rebuild and they find out they don't need their gifts. They just need each other. And it's what they need to live is just within them. It's not a gift. It's not magic that's bestowed upon them. It's within their hearts the whole time. So they rebuild La Casita, and then Mirabel goes there, give her a special doorknob, she goes back into La Casita. And the moral of the story isn't that it's always in our hearts. Magic is restored. Yeah, that's the best thing ever. And everyone gets their magical powers back the house gets its magic back and Mirabel is just plain again. Yeah, and
Tyler 16:46
if I can just add a little thing Mirabelle lives because she doesn't isn't magical. She doesn't get her own special room she lives in the nursery and apparently
Misha 16:56
mother on magical yeah children who aren't of age yet
Tyler 17:00
yeah, who then grow who then grow up and get magical? Yeah, so does so does Mirabelle go back to living in the nursery again now that the house is really
Misha 17:08
gave her? Oh, no, they just gave Yeah, she does. Because they gave her the doorknob to the whole house. Yeah, but not a doorknob to her own room. And so yeah, she just I guess this one this everyone gets their magic. Yeah,
Tyler 17:26
I guess this is the could
Misha 17:26
talk about this with story. Yes, maybe we should just we could just jump right into them now.
Tyler 17:33
Yeah, cuz originality is probably going to be pretty short, short conversation. But yeah, like I guess the big question is is Maribel magical or not? Because she does know she does understand the magic of the house. She sees the magic of what
Misha 17:48
he's has because she's because in the past she's just been like house helped me out.
Tyler 17:53
Yeah, but everyone can do that. But nobody can see the the connection to the house that she like, no one feels the connection. What do you mean see connection. Like she sees that the house is breaking when nobody else does. That's not just like a vision she's having she just sees it and no one else does. But she doesn't get her own particular special gift. But maybe her heard magic? Is that the magic of keeping everyone together, which is not fair to her, really, but it's
Misha 18:18
no, it just makes us a better person than everybody else.
Tyler 18:22
Yeah, I guess I'm just being a little pedantic and I'm actually in here, but like, I feel like she feels like she does have magic. It's just not the same kind. Anyway, let's talk about originality, originality. For once for once. We're you know, not please, but for once in a while we have a sense Coco.
Misha 18:47
Coco, it is original.
Tyler 18:49
Yeah, it's really original. The original story does not based on anything they came up with like, I mean, I guess you could say it's inspired by certain things, but it's not like a story like Dumbo or it's definitely right. And it's
Misha 19:10
yeah, there's no other media that like, you know, that came out beforehand about like, yeah, Mirabel the magic list child more likely.
Tyler 19:18
Yeah. Yeah, so it's, it's pretty original. The the thing I was gonna say is it's clearly like inspired by the magical realism of like, Gabrielle Garcia Marquez and like Columbia, but not enough to like say that it's on original
Misha 19:33
row. Right. I agree. I think this should get the full score full 10 out of 10. I agree.
Tyler 19:39
What did we give Coco again? Yeah, I agree. I think it's a 10 Something similar to Yeah, yeah. Like this is inspired by something. Coco is obviously inspired by deal de los Muertos, but it's not like knocking off any points or any right yeah, it's a it's a it's a 10 so that we can get to the story. Yeah. And into some of my conflict with this movie.
Misha 20:02
I mean, you heard the way I describe the end. Yeah.
Tyler 20:08
I watched this movie twice. And I definitely liked it more the second time. The first time the first time i i was left feeling on and enchanted in contact by the movie. Yeah, like less less enchanted than I may be expected because of all the hype and stuff. But you know, that's I guess, to be expected. The story is, I don't know, I guess I the the end was kind of disappointing.
Misha 20:36
I was like, really bummed because I was like, yes. That like, she's been feeling like this outsider, and not special. And she was told she was not special. And it was just like, so level the fucking playing field by leveling the house, rebuilding together without powers and then live your happy lives as people. And instead they just returned it to how it was like,
Tyler 21:05
magic.
Misha 21:06
Is it gonna take right? How long is it gonna take for all the siblings to just be like Nana, like, you know, back to their, like, their selves where they don't treat her great. And I'm not saying you're gonna treat her badly. Like I understand she saved the town. But it's just like, she doesn't have magical powers. Again, what keeping the house together knowing when danger. She fixed it. So now what?
Tyler 21:33
Yeah, yeah, good point. And her Yeah, her putting the doorknob back on the new house. nonmedical House made it magical again. That's another reason I was thinking like she does have power power that she'll have
Misha 21:46
to prove to the others that she is special. But I don't think I would call it a magical power. Yeah.
Tyler 21:57
Yeah. Okay. Because that's what she can do
Misha 21:59
with that the grandma could use the house as I know, Abuela couldn't see the cracks. And like, but she knew she knew like she believed her but lied about it, I think. I don't know. Yeah. I was really disappointed by the ending.
Tyler 22:15
It wraps things up to like this, this movie is interesting, in many ways. In many, for many reasons. It's interesting, but it's interesting, because like the, which we'll get into with like, some of the categories is like the, the the crux of the issue is like generational trauma, and how we deal with that, and how, like, we pass on our shit on Yes. Next Generation and, and how we don't talk about things and aren't open with each other. And that's really interesting, but I feel like the movie, but then they wrapped up in a nice little bow at the end, they get
Misha 22:50
Yeah, and then they're like, Okay, let's just have this not great song to like, say, happily ever after.
Tyler 23:00
Yeah. It's like, yeah, it's like, I mean, it's Disney, of course. But it's like, they come up with this really interesting idea of like, a messy topic. And like, life is a mess. And we've got to like, come together and work on this. And then but then it all gets like Perfectly Wrapped up and magics real again. Yay. And we are we're not going to talk about the fact that grandmother's been kind of mistreating us for a while and right like, and also another thing I had with the story is like, they everyone's cool with everything until like two thirds, two thirds of the way televi I don't think they do a good job of like, explaining why the abuela has pressure is bad for everybody.
Misha 23:43
Yes. It's like you would they I didn't realize it was the
Tyler 23:47
problem doesn't arise until like, it's a house falling apart. That's the problem. But then the real problem doesn't arise until they should have three quarters of the
Misha 23:55
way through snippets, like just hints at Isabella not being happy. They did it. Yeah. We had no idea. We're like, Yeah, she's the annoying, perfect sister. But like they should have shown glimpses of like Louisa being stressed out about Yeah, taking on all of the wait, we weren't until that terrible song.
Tyler 24:16
Yeah, Bruno, we'll get to the music and then like Bruno doesn't even show up until like, most of the way through the movie, but that makes it that makes sense. But but like, I feel like the movie I guess pacing was bad is what I'm trying to say. Like the it didn't like it spent so long describing the family and Mira bells place in it, that it almost was setting up a different movie. So the ending was just kind of Yeah, the last the last third just seemed like so rushed and
Misha 24:50
like the, like ship abuela with the other kids. It's like not just was a second. It's like a second thing and if they had to Just sort of kept that out. I think if they just kept that out totally, it would have made sense where abuela was hard on just Mirabel. And then realize she was wrong doing that, because she valued the magic so much, because that magic saved her. Right? They could have done just that storyline without the pressure on the others.
Tyler 25:27
And like at the end, it's like the the big climax is the abuela, like apologizes to Mirabelle. And it's like, Fine, you're apologizing but like, we haven't seen you be a horrible person at all. You've just been a tiny bit controlling and it's been hinted at a lot.
Misha 25:45
She was kind of went to Maribel with Mirabelle
Tyler 25:47
in some cases, yeah, like leave this to other people, blah, blah, blah. But like, the, it's setting up that she's the person that's the problem in the family, which I don't totally agree with, but we can get to that. But like, we never see her interactions with everybody else. And like, why that's putting pressure on debates
Misha 26:06
just because we think you're a bell? Yeah. Well, everybody and Maribel?
Tyler 26:13
Yeah, yeah.
Misha 26:18
I do. A grandma. So let's talk about that. I mean,
Tyler 26:21
it is the grandma. But it's like, they just don't do a good job. I think of like, setting up why she why her controlling nature and her need to have everything be perfect. So she can protect everybody. And so the magic, it just didn't land for me. Yeah,
Misha 26:38
that didn't. So I actually only realized that when I read the lyrics of I don't know if it was the English version that I read or the translated version of the Spanish version, dos auto greet us. With the two caterpillars. Yep. And those lyrics, talk about it a little bit like touch on that. And then I was like, oh, okay, now I get it. But that's it like you like what you're saying, like, they didn't make that very clear that she was too concerned with keeping the magic alive, rather than keeping the family happy and loving each other. Yeah. Right. And then until the very end, so it was just like, oh, by the way, this is what it's about.
Tyler 27:28
Yeah. And it's like, on the one hand, one another reason I'm conflicted is because like, especially after watching it today, for the second time, I was like, okay, like, there is no reason for like, okay, so part of me is like, they didn't explain this stuff at all, like, well enough at all. Like it's it's too vague sauce. Like why the grandmother is the quote unquote, bad guy, although I wouldn't go that far. And why, right, like part of me is like, they didn't explain this well enough at all. And it's all like, way too vague and then wraps up too nicely. And it's not messy enough for me. On the other hand, I'm thinking back to like reading Marquez, and I'm like, the magic and magical realism isn't explained and doesn't have to be explained. It's just part of life part of reality. So it's like, the fact that there's a magic candle that in the magic house that protects everybody. I don't think that means,
Misha 28:18
right. Yes, to be explained, it's like to be explained as more of a boil as motivation throughout it. Yes. Put her as the crux of, yes, the change that needs to happen. Yeah.
Tyler 28:32
Yeah, exactly. Cute, because I like that it's open because it's like, if you're extrapolating, you're like, well, it's her anger, sadness and grief that create the magic or whatever. But But yeah, like, basically, I guess. I'm talking in circles, but it boils down to I needed more abuela in this movie.
Misha 28:49
Yeah. Yes. I agree. If she's the reason yeah. Then we needed more of her throughout it like to see her. Like, what we should have seen is like Isabella doing something that she wasn't supposed to do. And abuela catching her. Yeah, like don't do that. Yeah, that's not perfect. Yeah, we just get a couple times. Yeah, Mirabelle. encouraged you to do it. Or like, you know, stuff like that. Like,
Tyler 29:18
she's just like a matriarch. Yeah, what
Misha 29:21
is it? Peppa Peppa Pepe? Pepe, pup? Pep. Sorry. You read it to Peppa. Peppa, Peppa,
Tyler 29:30
Peppa don't like Peppa pig pig salt and pepper.
Misha 29:32
It is like salt and pepper. Okay. I'm gonna say oh, like she's like it's constantly making all kinds of terrible weather and like, stressed out and abuela is never she's like there's a cloud over you. You're gonna get to ask but it's never like you're supposed to be doing this thing. You are like like, more like controlling she's not more controlling by Adjust with Maribel. And we've said this like she should have just been that should have been her thing with everyone throughout your like with Louisa like, like taking a nap. And then abuela coming and going quick. You have to go help somebody in the town
Tyler 30:20
like moving the church to the other side of town because it's next season or whatever. Yeah, like, right. Yeah, whatever it is. Yeah,
Misha 30:27
we just like taking a break. No, you can't take a break. You're strong. Like you can go do this. Yeah. Yeah.
Tyler 30:35
So I mean, yeah, it's a fine story. But the story isn't the best part of the movie. I think that it's like, what's underneath
Misha 30:43
if they trimmed it down. And then like, just beefed up some parts is great. Like, it's like, the bones of something great.
Tyler 30:57
Yeah, that's the thing. It's like the idea of what this movie is about is really interesting. Especially for kids. Really
Misha 31:05
interesting, though. I don't want to like to say none of the face of it, or whatever that no, of
Tyler 31:09
course, yeah, it's just it's just like, it's just the Yeah, they just didn't execute as needed to clean it. Yeah. As well as I think, honestly, it's like, it's, it's weirdly like too clean. It's too perfect. This movie is supposed to be like this story is a mess. It's supposed to be a messy story about a family. And it's, it's too perfect. I think. Well,
Misha 31:33
I thought what bothered me is when you know how like the two sisters don't like each other. They just don't like each other. And then in one song, their entire relationship is repaired and they're fine and happily ever after. Like I thought that was really brushed and strange. Yeah,
Tyler 31:48
all the Yeah, like many movies like this. Like there's so many characters that we don't get enough for that all of them like Louisa gets one song Isabella gets one song and then we're done with them. And Tonio gets his moment in the beginning and then we never see him again. Really. The dad is not a character except he gets stung by bees. And that's supposed to be funny. Like, it's it was gross. It's just disgusting. Yeah. It's like and then the character who and then the like Dolores, the one who's hearing is really good is like, a non entity except like a plot device at one point. And then like she's pining for a walk. So
Misha 32:24
you know, it doesn't bother me to have like characters like that, because it's not.
Tyler 32:30
It's not about so much like that span. Yeah, right. But it's just I don't know, it just sometimes it's just if Louisa just is in the background lifting stuff, and then she gets one. Like, I want song, and then we're done with her for the rest of it does feel a little bit like, okay, fine, I guess. I mean, on the one hand, I like the big family. I like the messy like family tree that we can't even keep straight. It's just I feel like the movie trying to wrap things up so nicely. loses the magic of what the idea of the movie is, like, the idea of the movie is this. Yeah, interesting mess. And it's almost like, they dignified it too much in a way. And I know that's weird, because it's a Disney movie, but, but not to say I didn't like it. Like I did enjoy it. I enjoyed it the second time, much more than the first time the first time. I was like, second time. I
Misha 33:21
was like, Okay, I enjoyed it the first time. What I really, I don't know, I just I really like Mirabel and I really FabFilter Yeah, out feeling like an outcast in your own family. I loved her. And I know we'll get to this with protagonist. But that's like, she was in the story. Like she's the story. Yeah. And she's cute and charming. And like fun. And that's but the end the story is about her. Yeah. And her growth. And so while that's also protagonist, I think that does carry the story. She's the story. What she has to go through.
Tyler 34:07
Yes, that's true. No, I like yeah, bruises are finding.
Misha 34:13
I know but I still like bro. No, I do. I like their relationship that they sort of like hint at like they're the two outcasts in the family. Like in the end credits. There's a silhouette of the two of them sitting together. I don't know if you saw that. But I like that. Like they have each it's to me, that's part of the story. There's like so many wonderful things that are part of the story that I do really like, like the majority of it. It was just not executed. Well. Yeah,
Tyler 34:43
yeah. No, I would agree with that. Like, they're most of the parts are fine. Some of them good. It's just overall I think, you know it. It's not like an EIGHT
Misha 34:56
and an EIGHT I would say your bill and Antonio are under the bed together.
Tyler 34:59
That's one Interesting. Yeah, I teared up. There's something like that. Uh, I mean, we'll get into this with the next category, but it's just so beautiful, obviously, with animation. Yeah. I mean, yeah, I think I okay, I'm fine with like Mira bells. Being Mirabelle positively affects the story, but I think we should, we should hold off most of that for giving her a protagonist protagonist. I mean, I would say, I don't know. I just don't feel like it gets into, like, our good category. It's like, maybe on the good part of fine. So if something like, I don't like a seven, oh, I was gonna say
Misha 35:41
seven, two, because to me, seven and up is good. four through six is like, you have the bad side of fine, fine. The good side of fine. So that's four through six. Three and under is bad. Seven Up is good. So if it sends
Tyler 35:57
it to me have as much of a likeable protagonist, maybe a six, maybe less? Because it's like, Yeah, cuz it's like Bruno's there. He's cool their relationships. Cool. But that's barely in the movie of boilers barely in it and all these things that are like that bugged me about it. But overall, yeah,
Misha 36:13
the other. So this is not protagonist. This is story when she realizes that she has to be the one to save the family because they can't even see it. Right. Like, she knows she has to do it. And she's like, Okay, I don't have the power. I'm going to do this. She's like, the whole thing. Putting on her shoes, putting on her outfit putting her bag on. She's like, Okay, I have no idea what I'm doing. Yeah. And then the house just shrugs with its little like covered. We're gonna save our
Tyler 36:41
miracle. Like, wait a second. Yeah, that's that part was really save America.
Misha 36:45
Yeah. Right. But then she like, I was worried. This is, I think, a really big part of the story. I was worried that she would just be like, okay, and then they would cut to her finding, like, you know, Bruno's vision board or whatever. But instead, she had to do like the legwork to go around town, figure out stuff, talk to people. I thought that was really good. Because that's like on Disney. Right, in terms of like how things move along. And I liked that a lot where she needed to do some groundwork because it's not. She's just a person. Yeah. And I liked that. And I think that's a big part of the story. Yeah.
Tyler 37:23
So I think yeah, seven, I mean, people might rake us over the coals, but I think seven all the time, seven people. I mean, people have raked over the coals, but in their hearts, they might be if people have disputes or arguments and hey, please get in touch. We'd love to hear from you. But for us, seven out of 10 seems just about right. Yeah. Okay, not as negative as some of the reviews I read. But yeah, most of the views of the movie were quite positive animation is the next category now. I mean, what can we say? It's amazing. Like, it's absolutely beautiful,
Misha 38:01
beautiful. It's fucking incredible. Like most of my notes are just about the animation and, and music, which we'll get to, but yeah, it's really good.
Tyler 38:14
It's vibrant. It's when she goes into her room,
Misha 38:17
to to figure out what she's going to do to save the miracle. You can see all of that, like when she pulls out the yarn, like the yarn, the fabric, the embroidery, you can see it's like three dimensional three dimensional embroidery. Which she goes to Bruno's tower and she like, and there's sand in her hair. Yeah.
Tyler 38:42
Even like, like, specks on her face, too. Yeah,
Misha 38:46
yeah. Just on Yeah. Incredible. So
Tyler 38:50
many beautiful little details like the expressiveness of not everybody's face cuz some of the like, the side characters are a bit like bland but like the expressiveness of Mirabelle his face like that, like that scene you talked about under the bed with Antonio is so magical, it almost looks like it almost looks like two kids under a bed like in like a real, like real kids.
Misha 39:12
Just gorgeous, the scenery, everything. It's just a beautiful movie. Like all these
Tyler 39:17
pretty little touches, like they're butterflies all over her dress, which is alluding to what comes later, with the confrontation with or denouement with a with a boya I like cooking, they're
Misha 39:32
rapists.
Tyler 39:34
I'm just getting so angry. so badly. I was getting so hungry, the kitchen, the whole and then the animation of the house could the casita and how the donkeys
Misha 39:48
donkeys are so cute. The rats,
Tyler 39:51
the rats are really great. All the animals like the cat Beaver and the would you call them karate Monday's the little like sort of raccoon looking Creatures, okay, they're all like all the atmosphere was so very cute. I wanted a little bit more of those animals, but obviously I know, but I
Misha 40:09
get. Yeah, I'm glad they did it because it would have felt like
Tyler 40:13
it would have felt stuck. Yeah, but it's like whatever you get introduce a cute, Goofy looking animal like a tape here or the cat I think, who didn't give a shit. It's like I want more of that. I want more. Right? Don't give a fuck cat Bieber in my life. Basically.
Misha 40:28
I think we would both choose the same superpower.
Tyler 40:32
Oh, yeah, for sure. That was one of my things I was gonna ask best gets worse gift. So let's just talk about the best gift. Talking to animals and being friends with animals. Yeah,
Misha 40:41
yeah. Obviously. Like, I will lose my shirt and I want his room. Yeah, I want to live in that room. Yeah,
Tyler 40:46
perfect room. Worst gift. I've got a choice.
Misha 40:53
I think I do too. But it makes me sad to say it. So I have to think oh, okay, I know my worst one.
Tyler 41:00
Okay, what's your worst one? Or do you want to say three to one and then say, okay. 3211
Misha 41:08
weather?
Tyler 41:09
Oh, shit. I got I got thrown off because there was a lag. And you started I started counting on you started counting. I'm like, I wouldn't say whether I would say the hearing one. The super hearing she hears
Misha 41:26
because she's like, Oh, everybody's too. I forgot about her when I was running.
Tyler 41:30
Masturbate and Barnes. She's hearing people like fight all night. She's heard people fart on their kids. That
Misha 41:37
one's way worse than the weather thing. The weather thing. I was just like, I don't know what to pick. I don't want to pick Bruno's because I feel bad for him. Like,
Tyler 41:43
yeah, I would prefer I mean, if it were me, I would prefer him troll it.
Misha 41:47
I would prefer him troll his like choose to use it or not, which is a good thing. Yeah.
Tyler 41:51
And he's just like, awkward or whatever. Like, whatever. I tried to make hearing
Misha 41:57
thing. Hearing things like every people. Everything somebody says about you. Oh, terrible. Everything
Tyler 42:05
that village she knows every single She immediately says Oh, he wants five kids or whatever the person she's in love with. She can hear him talking about her cousin every day all day. She hears her parents fucking she hears everything. She hears everyone in the house dropping loads into their live house bathroom. I guess. Does the House have a bathroom? It's
Misha 42:28
also alive here. The butterflies flapping their wings. Yeah, I
Tyler 42:32
think the curse is I know. Yeah, I agree. The weather thing is I don't I don't I wouldn't mind that. Like I my problem. The weather. The thing is like
Misha 42:43
you put me on the spot and then you didn't fucking answer. Yeah. Well, I got sick.
Tyler 42:51
The weather thing? I don't know. It's just I wouldn't bother me. I guess it's a little weird that like rain. The classic like I guess it's just what everybody thinks is like rain is bad mood. Weather but like,
Misha 43:04
but why don't they were like, what would be cool is okay, you have Steve would obviously take Isabella's plant powers. Okay, then you come along and somebody's like, oh, I can control the weather and you're like great water all these plants. Easy peasy. Oh, things are looking a little dry. Oh, we need it to be a little warmer. Oop, doesn't that?
Tyler 43:26
Yeah. When Isabella's plant power changes from just pretty flowers to like all the cool like cacti and interesting finds of I was like, the first thing I thought about was Steve.
Misha 43:39
Like, why doesn't she grow food for the town?
Tyler 43:42
Maybe lying around because she's self self centered. Like we don't we don't know enough about our plan. All we know is that she's a perfect She's perfect. And we don't really have more of an idea of who she is. Yeah. Also like the food magic power is the mom. So then I guess that was off the off the hook and she can just make the ofrendas Oh, no,
Misha 44:04
but the mom doesn't create food. It's just what she cooks and feeds to people heals them.
Tyler 44:11
Yeah. So she's got the food. I don't know
Misha 44:15
where she getting the ingredients from from
Tyler 44:17
buying labourers
Misha 44:19
who have farm laborers hard donkeys do all the work but then they get out because they're working too hard. And they're like why is it this bitch growing all the plants and the food and the crops?
Tyler 44:32
Yeah. Hey, you're right. It's not a perfect system donkeys go on strike
Misha 44:36
donkeys.
Tyler 44:40
They get rounded up by the donkey round rubber. Yeah, the local tough. Yeah, I guess you could make the point that like super strength would be cool too. But like, Yeah, I think I'd have to go with I would definitely go the animal one just because it'd be so cool to builder like 100% I'd got to Have a Jaguar and ride a Jaguar and yeah, they like it.
Misha 45:03
It's not just forcing them. They want to help constructing friendship, okay, when they go into the room when Antonio and his animals go into the room where Bruno and Mirabelle are, and he was just like, oh, the rats told me what you were up to. And then you see the Jaguar with its mouth over the rats out to eat them. That was really cute. It
Tyler 45:29
was a bit unbelievable that all those animals could get in there without making any noise, but I let it pass. Speaking of power, I don't know that actually, let's let's we can get to this with with side kicks and stuff. Let's great animation. I mean, I think it's as good as cocoa. Which means it I agree.
Misha 45:51
I think it's a 10.
Tyler 45:52
I think it's a solid. Yes. Visually amazing. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Music and sound you have you've mentioned this a couple times. Why don't you start with how you feel about the music?
Misha 46:07
I think it's okay. And that is controversial, because people have been saying, oh, yeah, but it this feels like they made a good soundtrack. And then they were like, Okay, how can we make this more annoying, so kids will like it. And cram in more Lin Manuel Miranda?
Tyler 46:35
Well, apparently, from the beginning, he was working on it. So it's not like they brought him in.
Misha 46:40
I know. But like, there were parts where I was, like, pulled out of what was happening because I was like, this is Lin Manuel Miranda, putting his Wet Willie all over this thing. Like calm down. You don't have to shoehorn in like your style. So we know. And that's it was like, like, I didn't like Louisa song for a couple reasons. One, it felt like it was under produced where the like, what do you like so she's singing. And then like, under, there's like, the background music, right. Like behind it. It felt like something was missing. Like, it just felt like it wasn't finished yet. And it felt like another thing, like the whole song I like we were talking about how we didn't see any of their real feelings throughout the whole movie of the extra of the side kicks, right? And then all of a sudden, she like, has this song. I just I didn't really like it. And it was just sort of like, hey, like, she's gonna Lin Manuel Miranda sing about it.
Tyler 47:46
Yeah, I found I didn't have a huge problem with the song but I just felt felt like it felt a bit flat because it was like, Yeah, this big, powerful empowering song about like being strong, but having, you know, being fragile at the same time. That's just okay.
Misha 48:04
Like, yeah,
Tyler 48:06
I just it just felt like Where's this coming from? Like, we haven't
Misha 48:11
it felt out of place in terms of the topic and the music itself. Yeah, just all out of place. And to me that felt like oh, Lin Manuel Miranda needs to showcase his work because otherwise his ego isn't inflated enough.
Tyler 48:30
Like I I mean, I agree with you, but also like I feel like he he just has a style like I don't think so. And sometimes it
Misha 48:41
flows, music, but I disagree because Why do you have to shoehorn it in when it doesn't match with anything else or fit even the song or fit like so the second time this happens is that the end in the song all of you when they're standing in the ruins of the of La Casita, and you're singing and then all of a sudden Bruno starts his Lin Manuel Miranda rap and it's just like this doesn't fit with the rest of it doesn't flow in and out nicely. It just feels like I'm gonna stick this in because people know this is Lin Manuel Miranda, and people love him. So we're gonna put this in. And yeah, it doesn't feel like it's the nature of the characters. It doesn't it just doesn't. It just didn't make sense.
Tyler 49:27
I think most of the songs he does for this fit that one. I totally agree that that one like that one. In the end song that you mentioned were Bruno's like rapping also just because John Leguizamo cannot sing. Just stylistically didn't fit but like we don't talk about burnout. That one fits because it like that one stylistically, fits at least a little bit more, I think.
Misha 49:48
Yes, exactly. So that was fine. I liked that song, but like, they do shoehorn in some things,
Tyler 49:55
like they send
Misha 49:59
videos like He felt like out of place music videos like Louise's song surface pressure it felt like up we're no longer in this village we're somewhere else where she's doing a music video just cut that song
Tyler 50:11
it make room for that was like yeah, like playing with the magical realism thing most like a lot of the songs.
Misha 50:19
It didn't feel like playing with magical realism to be though
Tyler 50:23
I'm just trying to like come up with a reason why they did it like why they choked because surface surface pressure them credit surface pressure, they did it. And the first song where she were mer Mirabella is like explaining her family. That one kind of also takes place outside of reality because she's explaining her family to the town and the town knows who are families and the town knows that she's the nonmagical No, but she's explaining literally kids but the whole town is in on the whole thing. Like it becomes Yeah, and then the grandmother is like valve What are you doing, which is great, like from the dorm, and then the Isabella song also sort of takes place in a weird fantasy looks a bit of it too.
Misha 51:04
Yeah, to me those fit a little bit better visually with their characters and where they are and I don't know it just felt like it was like an extra thing that
Tyler 51:16
Yeah, it's funny that you it's funny that in that song that Louisa one what's called in surface pressure surface pressure. In that one she mentions Hercules because that music video reminded me of the movie Hercules Oh, that's funny because it's like it was really weird and comical and they're like all hanging off a cliff and like you know, fighting boulders and stuff like that so it did not fit I agree that song it's just like they wanted a banger and they got one it but it's only a banger. Like if you listen to it on Spotify and you don't watch it in the movie I
Misha 51:52
think right right right.
Tyler 51:54
I also don't think we don't talk about Bruno is as amazing as everyone seems to
Misha 51:59
think it is. It's what I'd say that are thought but here's my
Tyler 52:03
this is maybe just me being annoying, but the two best songs in the movie in my opinion are those oral Gita Yes. Which made me cry.
Misha 52:10
That's my favorite.
Tyler 52:12
Columbia Mian Cocteau is my
Misha 52:15
me to be to Dakota
Tyler 52:17
Gates has made me cry me to some I didn't first I didn't cry whatever. But today I cried like a fucking idiot. Well, I
Misha 52:24
screwed up a little bit. It's just beautiful. Well also because of what's happening when that song
Tyler 52:30
children I lost Yeah.
Misha 52:32
I didn't lose it. I actually kept my loss. So I'm like, I'll tell you what, I
Tyler 52:37
cried. Right. You said you cried during the under the bed scene.
Misha 52:41
I teared up I didn't cry I just a little little wet eyes. I cried when? Mirabelle was crying at the river by herself.
Tyler 52:56
That I do this thing I started tearing up in my body started shaking, but I didn't go further than that. Thank God, like I do what's not shaking, but like my face starts quivering as if like I'm about to cry, but then I don't lip tremble. Yeah, like, like, but my face is trembling like I like I've got like a disease. Or like a stroke.
Misha 53:16
I really I feel for her. Yeah, yeah. Anyway, so music.
Tyler 53:22
I have something I want to talk about with her. But we can talk about it with protagonist music and sound. The score. I want to talk about the score. I thought the score was really great. Me too. Jermaine Franco. The score was also apparently the first the first Latina to be in the academy for for music, apparently. I don't know if I'm getting that detail. first Latina to join the music branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. So shout out.
Misha 53:47
Wow, that took too long to say that. No. Or she says
Tyler 53:56
Oh, yeah, for sure. It takes I don't know, first. I don't know what years. What happened. What is it that she? Yeah, I mean, I don't know. What should we give her for a score? Because, um, the standout songs that everyone loves? I think our weak spots in the movie too.
Misha 54:15
Although I heard they submitted those order. We get those ordered with us to the Oscars and not the Bruno's song. Nice. So and I agree. Yeah, that song is much better. I
Tyler 54:31
think the music and sound with the exception of like a couple songs is pretty good. And I think it's better than most movies. Yeah. We've reviewed still I
Misha 54:43
agree. I think it's okay, you say what you were gonna give it and then I'll say I'm
Tyler 54:50
thinking mostly just kind of looking back at other scores to kind of get to where I want to put this thing I propose a seven
Misha 54:59
Yeah. Me too.
Tyler 55:03
Great. Yeah. When I when I first started watching the movie and got to the surface pressure, I was like, Okay, this song is like, gonna be a hit. But man, man, the music's not gonna be good in this movie. But it turned out Yeah, it turned out mostly Okay, I think yeah,
Misha 55:18
yeah, that's the thing. Like, I was really disappointed by that song. And
Tyler 55:22
it's like, I don't know, it's like they go through all the trouble of like, making this we'll get to it like a movie that really does a good job of like, respecting where, what it's where, where it's about the culture. It's about and then like, they again, no offense Lin Manuel Miranda, like don't have a lot of enough songs that are like Colombian sounds like like mein Konto was great. doesn't rise was great. Or even like
Misha 55:49
they could like I get they could have used Colombia like contemporary Colombian pop music to inspire pop music in the movie and it doesn't even sound like they did that.
Tyler 56:02
They got a pop. They got a popular I don't know what type of music he sings I didn't look. I didn't do that much research, but the guy who sings dos Okita is a famous Colombian singer.
Misha 56:13
Right? But that to me, that's not a pop song.
Tyler 56:16
That's like a metal Miranda wrote that one too. Yeah, I think okay.
Misha 56:20
I love that song. I'm
Tyler 56:22
like Coco, which is Coco. They went to Mexico. They got Mexican artists in like musicians and involve them in the in the music,
Misha 56:30
the mute the music of Coco. It showed. Yeah, it's like, strikingly, noticeably better.
Tyler 56:41
Okay, so protagonist. Like you like you started to say earlier. She's really great. Maribel is so great. She's like scrappy. She's, she's supportive. She's loving. She's brave. The movie, unlike the character and brave the movie gives her stuff to do.
Misha 57:01
Yeah. And it's not just gives her it's like, what I really like about it. Things don't just happen to her. She intentionally makes decisions to go do things. And that is so unlike what we see in any movie, right? It's always like waiting for something to happen. This happened. Now I react this way this she's told not to do stuff. And she still is like, No, I have to fix stuff. I'm gonna go do it. She's awesome. And she's cute. And little baby Maribel is so cute. And I love her hair. And I am biased because curly hair is the best and black curly hair is the ultimate best. I decided the next time I'm getting a haircut professionally because I cut my own hair because I don't care. But I'm thinking that I'm going to just bring a picture of Maribel and be like, Do this.
Tyler 58:00
Do this. And the we can talk about this later, I guess but like the because I think like the performances of the actress who played Maribel was so great. Stephanie. I've Yeah, from like Brooklyn nine nine. And that other movie that just came out in the heights article? Yeah.
Misha 58:23
I don't know. I didn't see it. It's that's a Lindman. Well,
Tyler 58:28
that's a little thing back. Linear everywhere.
Misha 58:33
I haven't seen it, but I heard it's good.
Tyler 58:36
A couple of things I wanted to bring up with Maribel. Yes, definitely Beatrice did an excellent excellent job, the voice acting in the whole movies. She was really, really sold in a couple of things. One a couple of like fan theories. I wanted to float your way. One. Not not saying that. I agree with these but just interesting ideas. One the reason Maribel doesn't have magic is because before she touches the candle, she wipes her fingers on her. Or after she touches the candle. She wipes her fingers on her dress before she touches the she's
Misha 59:04
sweating. And that wipes off the candle magic. Yeah, perhaps
Tyler 59:10
if you're sweaty like me, you can't be magical apparently. Or if you sweaty and you wipe your sweat if I don't know interesting second second fan shred. She is the reincarnation of Petro of weightless. Oh,
Misha 59:27
I love that one. Yeah.
Tyler 59:29
Which is why she knows where the butterflies are gonna be and like why she's the one who ties the house magic together and like, is able to solve it. I love that one. Yeah. And why she goes there to cry. She goes to the river to cry. Yeah.
Misha 59:46
Let's say Yes, she is. Yeah,
Tyler 59:48
I kind of like that idea. And also it's a two
Misha 59:51
or like, she's connected to him somehow she's not the reincarnation but there's like a direct connection. Yeah, yeah.
Tyler 59:58
She kind of looks Like him to, like the nose is a little similar. But she's super cute. Yeah, when she's walking to accept the gift which he doesn't end up getting. I again teared up a little bit like the first time watching it because she's just so adorable. Abu de la Sol hos.
Misha 1:00:20
What's the first line of the movie is in Spanish and I just it was just really sweet.
Tyler 1:00:27
Yeah. I don't know. What do we think about like a nine out of 10 for oh,
Misha 1:00:33
I think she should get a 10
Tyler 1:00:34
You think she should get a 10 i I'm fine with that because we not attend I guess because I don't know. I guess just because bias I don't know like I can't think of what do you I guess because this about because of the story? Like I guess that could have been
Misha 1:00:53
your rights are great. That's like it's the parts where she's not in it are bad. Yeah.
Tyler 1:01:00
And I guess we gave we gave him a gallon cocoa nine too. So I guess she's a teeny bit better. Yeah.
Misha 1:01:08
She's a tiny bit better. She's. I think she's better than Miguel. I'm fine with the 10. Sure. Good. She's so cute. Okay,
Tyler 1:01:17
so 10 for Mandeville, the miracle miracle. Yes.
Misha 1:01:21
Yeah, she
Tyler 1:01:22
is really. She's really, really just.
Misha 1:01:26
I didn't find any flaws. She's just so thank you ever read and charming. Yeah, I
Tyler 1:01:33
have a massive story. But oh, God.
Misha 1:01:36
I learned not to be again. I have a huge jump in my butt. I have a massive chode I don't know what.
Tyler 1:01:47
Boy. I'll just ask you now because I can't wait. We're gonna get to the kiss. We're gonna get to the movie, but like marijuana or Mirabel. I know Milan is a Molana. One is a 10 million is like an 11
Misha 1:02:01
minus 11. So that's actually why I felt bad about so okay, here's the thing. That's another thing. It's like giving not doing decimal points. Yeah, I know. I know. But
Tyler 1:02:11
they can be tense for different reasons in their own movies. So I'm fine with that. I just wanted to bring it up.
Misha 1:02:17
Because for example, like, shoot, it's an easy question.
Tyler 1:02:22
Yeah, I guess you're right.
Misha 1:02:24
Okay, question. Good question. So,
Tyler 1:02:26
sidekick sidekick, I guess in this case would be Bruno, and to a lesser extent, the other cousins and
Misha 1:02:40
I would just say, Bruno, because they don't help for a long. That's
Tyler 1:02:44
true. Right. They are there. Antonio, who helps get burned out to the where he can do his next vision?
Misha 1:02:52
I would say just Bruno. Yeah.
Tyler 1:02:57
In that case, I don't think this should be very high. Because although I like Bruno, he's not enough. And like, for example, he's, he's like the quirky family sidekick, like Hector was and Coco, but Hector is like in it a lot in his pitch. That made more sense. Right. Yeah. Bruno. Bruno Bernards, like a motif where through the music and stuff like that image
Misha 1:03:23
wasn't in it, because they hyped him what he was, yeah, what happened? And then you just see him and he's just like, it's like, to
Tyler 1:03:37
party with my peeps cruising pre planned through COVID-19 and crazy strains. Nana Yeah, he's a pest. He's just
Misha 1:03:44
like a funny dope hiding out in the wall. Yeah. I
Tyler 1:03:48
was so sad when they showed his dinner table. Because he like eats of the family be with the family.
Misha 1:03:55
That's the thing. Like,
Tyler 1:04:00
oh, which it's like, which again, that goes back to story if Dolores heard him the whole time, which we have to assume she did. Because she says so at the end, like, Oh, I knew I heard he was around. Yep. If she is so scared of abuela that she doesn't say my uncle is in the walls, like Intel people. And we should we should. We should see more of that control that abuela has over people. Yeah. Like
Misha 1:04:25
she should have been the one that was like, don't talk about Bruno. Nobody taught like if, you know, they start to somebody starts to say something. Yeah. Like if Doris was like, Well, I heard like you think she would say like from somebody but she actually heard in the well like stuff like that. Yeah. And then
Tyler 1:04:44
yeah, anyway, um, I mean, yeah, like Brene just like side kicks.
Misha 1:04:49
He's just not he's not a good side kicks that aside,
Tyler 1:04:54
I would say, I mean, I think you should get some points because he's, he is likable but and he's He's an interesting part. He's pivotal critical to the story also, but like, yeah, I don't know what would say three
Misha 1:05:07
to one we're Damn it. I was gonna say
Tyler 1:05:12
a four okay?
Misha 1:05:15
Because even though his actual self is not in it the whole time his presence is in it. Yeah the whole time.
Tyler 1:05:24
But he but the city doesn't act like a size side kicks category.
Misha 1:05:27
But it's the vision like the parts his tower I think we need to bump it up to a four.
Tyler 1:05:34
Four is fine. I don't Yeah, I don't think any higher than that. But for some
Misha 1:05:37
traits is bad. Yeah, I don't think it's as bad as a three. Yeah,
Tyler 1:05:41
okay, four is fine. Next category. This one maybe will be controversial. I don't know. Villain. Now. Personally, I don't think this movie has a villain. I don't think abuela is a villain.
Misha 1:05:57
I don't think she's a villain either. I mean, I think they sort of say like, yeah, no villain.
Tyler 1:06:06
I've seen some things on like Twitter and stuff that were like, how are how do people think that she's a villain? And I was like, I had no context because I hadn't seen the movie yet. And I I would agree with that sentiment. I don't quite know. Here's the thing. Like she's not there are problems she causes for the family, obviously. And the whole family causes but it's it's not they're setting it up that like it's her trying to control and protect the family that is making everyone feel the way they feel. And it's
Misha 1:06:37
so I actually think if they did the story better, she would have been the villain.
Tyler 1:06:42
Yeah, but it's like I don't like the it's the villain is wrong here. I know. I know. The villain know, I know. Like a bad grandma. She's grandma. She's a controlling grandma on like, yeah, that
Misha 1:06:53
doesn't make it also does love her family. But it's just right. Yeah. I mean, who doesn't have a controlling grandma? For sure.
Tyler 1:07:01
Like, what my my grandma, you know, spank. Spank me when I didn't finish my dinner. That's a villain. No, I
Misha 1:07:09
hope she chopped your hand off because you can't get rid of that state. But
Tyler 1:07:14
well, she didn't give me a credit card swipe
Tyler 1:07:25
gotta get to the, to the to the stinks. The stinker, the fart machine. The dirt button. Yeah, I don't think she's I mean, okay, so here's the thing, the we
Misha 1:07:42
never call a harsh. It's like
Tyler 1:07:45
a villain. The whole the what's interesting about the story is the like, sort of generational trauma at the heart of it, which is like down to abuela for for perpetuating. And so by the end of the movie, the the thing is like, yeah, like the movie wraps it up too nicely in like that families going to have, you know, like therapy or they shouldn't have therapy, they should talk about their problems. It's not like, oh, everything's okay. Now, because of Waylon. Mirabelle. Like hugs, things are not okay. But that doesn't make her the villain is just not the right word. And that's down to our categorization based on the classic Disney movies. But yeah, this is not a wicked stepmothers situation,
Misha 1:08:22
but
Tyler 1:08:25
we can stepmother or Jafar or what's the dude's name from DuckTales? I liked him a lot. Christopher Lloyd's guide launched it Merlok Thank you.
Misha 1:08:37
I agree. No villain.
Tyler 1:08:39
I think it's a one. That's and with that, I would say henchmen is a one two. Yep.
Misha 1:08:45
That sucks though. Because it does suck
Tyler 1:08:47
because the movie is good. Yeah. Okay. The movies pretty good. Like
Misha 1:08:52
our Yeah, our rating system is sorry to break it to somebody hurts. Not flawless. Yeah, I
Tyler 1:08:58
was in like, the next movie coming up is Fantasia and I love that. I loved that movie. I don't know how you feel about it. Now. I haven't seen it. Well, I'm guessing I'll still like it. It's gonna get a lot of ones. Yeah, it is. You just got to deal with that. But if Fantasia gets lower than the cars trilogy, I will eat my my steak but and then and then like, stink it out. Luckily, for the movie, however, the next category is strong female lead. I think that's
Misha 1:09:28
as strong as you can get. Right? You've got the matriarch abuela. Everyone in the family who's a strong character is a lady. Yeah, got Mirabelle. She's incredibly strong.
Tyler 1:09:40
Yeah. And she does like I mean, we gave Maratha Maratha. We get married on nine because she's she's very strong and just the movie lets her down here. Yeah. Mirabel is even but
Misha 1:09:55
also with Maratha. It's, it's a lot more it's more of the like things happening to you. Oh, yeah,
Tyler 1:10:00
she's like, I just want to like shoot my bow and arrow and ride a horse and doesn't really realize this, right? This I think I mean, that's 1010
Misha 1:10:11
out of 10.
Tyler 1:10:12
Mm hmm. And bipoc Representative slash portrayal? I would say this is also 10 out of 10.
Misha 1:10:17
Also with 10. Yeah, actually the only thing it's a 10 out of 10. But like, this is a Disney problem across the board. I don't think we'll see this change in a little bit, is that the makers of the movie, never like there aren't any Colombians who made the movie they had cultural consultants, they have Latina Latino Latinx voice actors, they've got writers and singers but it's like the people who produce and direct the movie aren't and
Tyler 1:11:00
it's kind of a bummer they say I don't remember if it's in the credits but according to the internet co directed by like in the credits it's directed by those two white dudes but then it says like CO directed by Oh Castro's miss that Yeah, but she but yeah, there she's not given full directing credits,
Misha 1:11:20
which is bullshit. Just do the same with.
Tyler 1:11:23
Same with marijuana. It's the same with cocoa as far as I remember. Yep,
Misha 1:11:28
cocoa. We had the same conversation but
Tyler 1:11:32
not bipoc. But brave was a female director. But then she she got replaced, even though the movie was like her idea. And yeah, it's very Disney. Yeah. So like still putting people white men often at the helm. Even white, even well intentioned people who care about respecting the culture, like we talked about with cocoa. Yeah. Right.
Misha 1:11:53
So I just wanted to bring that up. You think even though you're still gonna get a 10 out and drop it a little? No, because then cocoa should have gotten a nine out of 10. That's true, because it's the same thing. Such thing for Disney as a 10 out of 10 Well we can do is if they ever fucking release a movie where the people who make it are of the culture that they're representing? Fine, then we'll go back and change all the other scores tonight and give it a 10. But for Disney, this is the best
Tyler 1:12:15
that it gets. Yeah. If that ever happens, hopefully it does. We can always we can always do a sort of, I hope so. retcon Yeah, I mean, what can we say? Like, I mean, I guess just it's go watch the movie. And you'll see like, they they traveled to Colombia, they had cultural consultants, it looks very beautiful they
Misha 1:12:36
so and like, little details. So I read that her skirt is representative of a particular style from one particular town. And so I was reading about it and there isn't one especially in the more rural parts of Colombia there isn't one cultural identity because of the terrain it's so mountainous that a lot of the villages and towns were isolated so they develop their own cultural identity and own traditions and style. And they pulled for this from different places and I think that's really nice to like take to take little bits from different areas
Tyler 1:13:19
agreed. Yeah. And like the what we've seen before with like Aladdin, for example, it's about a quote unquote different culture far flung culture but everyone's all voice actors are white, this one we get, you know, people of color, not not just representation would also put the portrayal part, or like, sorry, the other way around, not just portraying, but also the representation behind the mic. Mics as well. Yeah, and then cool.
Misha 1:13:47
Except for
Tyler 1:13:48
except for the mention what's Stan Oh, Alan Tudyk. Did they Alan two toys for the two cans for like a minute. And Oh,
Misha 1:13:57
speaking of the two can, there's a part I meant to bring this up in music and sound where he's scared and his little bill is rattling and it was really cute,
Tyler 1:14:06
and he hide sounds or Mirabelle curls will make it look like he had hair. And it's just what it's like, why get Alan to do that to
Misha 1:14:13
build. Who's really cute. I put my curls over billables little head. I tried doing that with data, but he was like, Oh fun and scratch my face instead.
Tyler 1:14:24
Yeah, that's fair. I probably would too if I work. Yeah,
Misha 1:14:27
is it
Tyler 1:14:29
I mean, we've came up to said hey, can I put my hair on your face gets hashtag not all cats. All cats are bastards, but they're lovable bastards. No,
Misha 1:14:40
not all cats. Not cats, rats, undergrads, maybe your two cats.
Tyler 1:14:46
My two cats are bastards. One of my kids is 12 years old and he still acts like a fucking child. He needs to grow the fuck up. Okay, that's a different podcast. We're a podcast grow the fuck up cat. Yeah. Get Started next week.
Misha 1:15:02
I mean, honestly, I can be a guest on the show and talk about how Bilbo had the Benjamin buttons disease. He called down. Yeah. Anyway.
Tyler 1:15:12
Fun Factor. This is fun. It is fun. It is fun.
Misha 1:15:17
I think it's fun.
Tyler 1:15:19
It is fun. Yeah.
Misha 1:15:21
Why are you sad?
Tyler 1:15:22
I just don't think it's like super fun because I just feel like the story really? is a bit of a deflates the whole movie. I think of it.
Misha 1:15:31
I don't think that's I don't think that's what deflates the fun of it. What I think if I was like, I really felt for Maribel and how she felt unloved and like an outsider in her own
Tyler 1:15:47
fun like the story is not fun. It's sad. It's it's it's a sad like she was doing
Misha 1:15:53
meaning the song and then her whale is like, you don't have powers. And then the little girl goes, Oh, that would make me so sad. I was like, it does fucking make everybody sad. Yeah. Yeah.
Tyler 1:16:10
Yeah, it's not a that's what I meant. Like the story kind of deflates the fun part.
Misha 1:16:14
I love Bruno's tower. It's such a fun, I think adventurous plays. I
Tyler 1:16:22
think in that case, though, I mean, here's my opinion about that. I that doesn't add to the fun that adds to the effervescence. I think it should get bonus points for like Disney magic. A lot of bonus points for like, it looks magical. It has that specialness. And time was fun. Animal Friends. Fine tune his animal friends. The Isabella's like, wow, rate the song whatever, right? The flowery like the flour powers turning into like Sundew power and spiny prickly cacti power like, and like the weird sort of Divali like,
Misha 1:17:01
no colorful powder. So that's holy, holy, holy. Yeah.
Tyler 1:17:05
Sorry, not Divali. But is there? Is there like a South American cultural thing like that, that that's come that's pulling from Are they just like sort of ripping that from Holy?
Misha 1:17:14
I don't know.
Tyler 1:17:18
Anyway, like, like, that was really interesting and cool. Yeah, I just don't think it was fun. I mean, I'm not saying you should get a one or anything. I just don't think it should be like over a five. I think like, somewhere in the middle for maybe that's low. And then just the effervescence is really good. Because it wasn't fun. It's a movie about like, family, drama, and not dealing with when I say I said four to be generous. Okay,
Misha 1:17:47
that's as high as Okay, I think it's fine. It's fine.
Tyler 1:17:50
I mean, I just don't think five or above is just too much. And I don't want to like give it points just because the movies like I mean, we're giving it high points in the things that deserves truly deserves high points in I don't think we should give it higher points and things that it doesn't deserve it. So
Misha 1:18:09
that makes sense. Yeah. All right. All right. doesn't
Tyler 1:18:13
sit right. I there's nothing in it. That doesn't scratch me. Did you catch anything? Other than the thing you mentioned about the director? Actually,
Misha 1:18:19
I do want to give negative 1.2 doesn't sit right. The dad's be staying was so why not necessarily disgusting. And twice and we had to watch it twice.
Tyler 1:18:38
They do that because he's like accident prone. Right? Is that the reason why
Misha 1:18:42
two bees Why can't she heal the allergy instead of just healing the beasting reaction? Because he was born with the allergy? I don't know. Yeah, the second time it happens. Antonio had already received his talk to animals powers. Why couldn't he tell the bees not to stain his dad? His uncle? Yeah, his uncle. Yeah, if he blows up into the most disgusting thing we have to look at like JP Morgan style gross.
Tyler 1:19:11
Oh, good. Good call back to the morgue Meister to the Carbuncle man himself. The man of business and banking.
Misha 1:19:20
I do want to lose a point for how I was I didn't need to be gross, you know? Because they could have made it silly. Like you,
Tyler 1:19:28
but they made it. Yeah, overly gross cauliflower ear of
Misha 1:19:33
a wrestler, times 20
Tyler 1:19:35
It was pretty gross. Speaking of gross things, this doesn't need to make it lose another point. But the member of the family, Antonio's brother Camilo, the one who can shape shift at a couple points. He at one point when everyone's showing up to everyone showing up for Antonio's gift ceremony right from the village and Camilo started shape shifting into each person to greet them. That's just really creepy to me. You think oh yeah, like that. Yeah. Hey John your fire so turns into John turns into a little girl to give her I vote that I don't want to see myself. I don't want to see myself. I don't want to be greeted by myself. So how many times do you think Camilo turns into someone else and then checks out their nartech?
Misha 1:20:15
Oh, all the time or like, makes out with other people
Tyler 1:20:18
boobs? Yeah. Oh,
Misha 1:20:22
hunky guy and just masturbate like crazy.
Tyler 1:20:25
Like he turns into his dad and makes it like, imitates
Misha 1:20:28
his dad small and I liked that part.
Tyler 1:20:31
Yeah, that was funny. Yeah, it's just the first thing I thought it was like, Oh, that kid's probably doing some pervy stuff with his face. Yeah. effervescence. I think this is pretty effortless. Yeah. However professing do we want to go here? Um,
Misha 1:20:48
I think it gets full effervescent.
Tyler 1:20:50
Thanks. So more than Coco
Misha 1:20:51
I think he gets the same effervescence as Coco.
Tyler 1:20:55
Yeah, that's the thing. Like I it is very progressive, but it's like we gave a tend to like, tell. Yeah, like the like Cinderella saints, the big hitters. I mean, I don't want to. I don't want to I don't want to. I mean, the thing is, I guess like we have different definitions of what this category kind of
Misha 1:21:15
feeling plays a part. Yeah. In effervescence, and I did not get any of that, except for that one song.
Tyler 1:21:23
Yeah. And that's why I think that's why actually, that was maybe why you actually I think Coco's more effort. And I think you brought down cocoa down because of the music as well. Yeah, I'm fine with like, something like a set. Yeah. I mean, I guess I don't want to get stuck in the habit of like, only giving tends to classics. But thus far.
Misha 1:21:43
No, this isn't a tan. I just spoke quickly. Um, I mean, so
Tyler 1:21:47
far we've only given tends to classics, but I don't think this
Misha 1:21:50
is as effervescent as Coco. Okay.
Tyler 1:21:54
Yeah. I mean, at eight is fine to me, too. I just think it 10 is maybe a bit too. I
Misha 1:21:58
I know, I just got excited, but 10 is reserved for a movie coming up in a long time. Yeah, no,
Tyler 1:22:04
yeah, I guess I first wanted to say not quite attend, just because of the issues we had with music and, and stuff like that. Because it all basically this bonus is like it all ties together and gives that thing that is not just an addition of some of its parts, which movies have that are more contemporary, not just Cinderella,
Misha 1:22:24
I think what I'm thinking about with effervescence, as we talk through this is the ending falls flat. And it's magical and lovely throughout the film. When abuela and Maribel are together talking at the river, you get some of that, but then the rest of it, you're just like Womp womp with the ending and it deflates some of that magic. You don't I want didn't walk away being like, Oh, I feel so good. Now, I walked away being like, Well, that was dumb. And it like sort of changes what came previously in my mind in terms of effervescence.
Tyler 1:23:10
Yeah, for sure. Like there are we talked about this too with Coco like there are moments of like 10 out of 10 brilliance in this movie 10 out of 10 like Disney magic moments, like when the house like when you first like get a taste of the house, I think and like the casita as a character. I think that's very, very
Misha 1:23:30
magical. Yeah, I love that attitude of like casita is sort of like it's got a great personality, I think.
Tyler 1:23:39
Yeah, like, when Antonio powers it with the with the tree and everything that's, that's up there.
Misha 1:23:44
But a picture of the vision that the glowing vision like that, to me has a lot of effervescence, like just that it moves and it's like, you don't know what the fate is going to be that the holographic image and what that looks like. I loved all of that and that she's the one who needs to find this and put the pieces together. It like adds to that but
Tyler 1:24:08
yeah, I'm fine with eight out of 10 matching cocoa
Misha 1:24:13
Okay, me too.
Tyler 1:24:15
Okay, yeah, so,
Misha 1:24:17
all right, you ready to hear what the final score is?
Tyler 1:24:20
I am drum roll. All right.
Misha 1:24:25
Oh, not bad. All right. Okay, folks, and carto out of a possible 110 points. Got an 81
Tyler 1:24:35
Okay. 81 the number of provinces in Turkey interesting. Really? Yeah. Wow. Ciao. Wow. Is that that second place now? Right. Yeah,
Misha 1:24:51
it is second place. Second place after coach is what I expected because it is a very good movie.
Tyler 1:24:57
And third place is is Cinderella still? Yeah, okay. Well, all right, well, okay, I, I guess that is a little I expected it to be high. But that's higher than I expect.
Misha 1:25:10
Oh, I expected it to be higher based on how I felt watching it. Because I really enjoyed watching it.
Tyler 1:25:19
Opposite for me, I think is as we've been talking about it, I've been like liking it more than when I
Misha 1:25:24
finished because I'm telling you to like it more. Yeah.
Tyler 1:25:28
Because I definitely the I definitely like maybe I didn't articulate it very well, but I had some, like, kind of big issues with this movie. But I mean, overall, it's still solid film for sure.
Misha 1:25:39
All right, yeah. Yeah. I tried just sort of watching it. Like, I took notes. And I wrote, you know, my notes with a little category labels that, you know, just on the side, like animation, sound protagonist, that kind of thing. The story I paid the least amount of attention to as it developed, because it's like, you have to sort of keep track as it goes. And it wasn't until the end, that I realized that they beefed it, right? Like you don't realize until they wrap it up. It's like hard to like as it's going because you're just taking like sort of taking input. And then. So I liked it while I watched it. And then at the end was just like, oh, yeah, so that's why I thought it would do better only because I did enjoy it while it was happening for the most part. Now, but, you know, when you take a step back, look at it through a critical lens. It will might just do okay, it might do badly. It might do great. That's why we're here, folks. Yeah.
Tyler 1:26:52
Another quick little thing that I didn't this is something that like, I never really noticed, because I suck at dancing, but I'm just like looking at quick notes. Apparently, like, the characters had different dance styles, too, which was something interesting that I didn't even pick up on. So somebody listening maybe would be like, Oh, that person was like salsa. That person was like regular
Misha 1:27:15
husband. What's his name?
Tyler 1:27:19
To close the image
Misha 1:27:21
Jr. Yeah, right.
Tyler 1:27:24
Felix, okay. During
Misha 1:27:26
don't talk about Bruno. His dancing was so good. And he had a different style than everybody else he was assaulting. And it was really enjoyable to watch.
Tyler 1:27:39
Yeah, yeah. When when it shows them like on their wedding day like in front of the church. That part? Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Very good. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And apparently, like Louisa had like a different style, too. I really didn't. Also another thing that was weird about that, that Louisa song is the fucking dancing donkeys really put me off to. I mean, I get it. It's a kids movie. And they're supposed to be some funny moments, even in a movie like this, but it's just, I didn't like it.
Misha 1:28:03
I did like when she flew on the donkey unicorns though. I do like that. That was that. I loved that. Yeah. That was cute. Anyway, well, gang.
Tyler 1:28:15
Thanks so much for listening. And thanks again to our boy, Matt, who's the best and thanks to all our listeners who are sticking with us and new and old
Misha 1:28:27

Tyler 1:28:39
Yeah. And so any any review like all those sorts of things like help, you know fledgling podcast get more noticed and things like that on lists and things to get more people that maybe don't have no people that don't know we exist to have find out about us. So it'd be great if you could do that. Also, as we said in the beginning of the episode, you can get in touch with us at [email protected]
Misha 1:29:02
`or follow us on Twitter and Instagram @muchabupod until next
Tyler 1:29:07
time when we talk about one of my favorites as a kid Fantasia which was definitely going to get some low points and subcategories that just going into it. We know that's gonna happen. But
Misha 1:29:20
yeah, yeah, it'll, it's a fun one.
Tyler 1:29:24
It's a fun one. All right, see you next time.
Misha 1:29:29
Well, gee whiz, Tyler. Thanks.
Tyler 1:29:31
Thank you too.
Misha 1:29:36
Bye.
